automatic system of machinery

Automated Labor: The 'New Aesthetic' and Immaterial Physicality, by Michael Betancourt [make sure to check out: James Bridle's 'new aesthetic'].

never heard of: digital capitalism before (see: Digital Capitalism: Networking the Global Market Systems (2000), by Dan Schiller). what's happening, i think, is the immanentization of the… human. [took me about an hour to work that one out, but that is precisely it.]. mash this up with: Verizongate & X-O Sunnylands. yes, China is on the offense (hacking), U.S. is on the defense (terrorism), but they're both going in the same direction. digital capitalism may be another form of accelerationism where a critical "mass of workers" (the key here i think is: which workers?) …immanentizes.

A system of machinery, whether it reposes on the mere co-operation of similar machines, as in weaving, or on a combination of different machines, as in spinning, constitutes in itself a huge automaton, whenever it is driven by a self-acting prime mover. But although the factory as a whole be driven by its steam-engine, yet either some of the individual machines may require the aid of the workman for some of their movements (such aid was necessary for the running in of the mule carriage, before the invention of the self-acting mule, and is still necessary in fine-spinning mills); or, to enable a machine to do its work, certain parts of it may require to be handled by the workman like a manual tool; this was the case in machine-makers' workshops, before the conversion of the slide rest into a self-actor. As soon as a machine executes, without man's help, all the movements requisite to elaborate the raw material, needing only attendance from him, we have an automatic system of machinery, and one that is susceptible of constant improvement in its details. —Capital, Chapter Fifteen: Machinery and Modern Industry

—Grundrisse, MEGA II/1.2, Teil 2, Seite 570 (24-38)

Grundrisse, p691 :: Originally, when we examined the development of value into capital, the labour process was simply included within capital, and, as regards its physical conditions, its material presence, capital appeared as the totality of the conditions of this process, and correspondingly sorted itself out into certain qualitatively different parts, material of labour (this, not raw material, is the correct expression of the concept), means of labour and living labour. On one side, capital was divided into these three elements in accordance with its material composition; on the other, the labour process (or the merging of these elements into each other within the process) was their moving unity, the product their static unity. In this form, the material elements - material of labour, means of labour and living labour - appeared merely as the essential moments of the labour process itself, which capital appropriates. But this material side - or, its character as use value and as real process - did not at all coincide with its formal side.
