In the portrait [Allori's Giulia], a variant on the Choice of Hercules fills the upper-right area on the chair (fig. 40), where a graceful female figure, presumably the released Anima or 'Soul,' passes a seated preening Vanitas — complete with her attributes, a sceptre, purse, and mirror. The Soul embarks at that junction on a rocky, upward path towards a beckoning nude figure. This tiny figure seems to combine the attributes of Occasione-Fortuna, and sports the forelock and bald-naped skull recorded for Occasione by Alciati in 1531. Ripa's nude Occasione is similar. The forelock streams ahead to signify that once she speeds past, the opportunity to grasp her is forever lost. The merging of the two expressed the dogmatic view that Occasione-Fortuna is potentially malleable, and that man is responsible for deciding his own fate. In her total nudity, Allori's figure approximates Veritas, too, described as 'adornata in modo con le parole,' that is, as nude and unadorned as her words. Allori has placed a yoke, emblem of Pope Leo X de' Medici — and of Matrimonio — on her shoulders. This composite Occasione-Fortuna-Veritas points to the lighted area above, into which she and the Soul are destined to emerge; her role for spiritual guidance is implied. A taste for this type of involved invenzione would derive from Allori's years with Bronzino, but this assiduously worked parable is all his own.

Alciati's dialogue for Occasione — Opportunity — emphasizes that she offers only one chance to be seized. Timing was everything [Alciato's Book of Emblems: Emblem 122]:

[Interlocutor]: 'Why is there a lock of hair on your brow?'
[Occasione/Opportunity]: 'So that I may be seized as I run towards you.'
[Interlocutor]: 'But come, tell us now, why ever is the back of your head bald?'
[Occasione/Opportunity]: 'So that if any person once lets me depart on my winged feet, I may not thereafter be caught by having my hair seized.'

Allori's Choice composition draws on Cartari's 1556 Fortuna buona, inspired from Greek stelae, in which a dejected woman is shown seated, accompanied by a young girl; they are approached by a graceful young woman, who offers her right hand and indicates Fortuna buona's path. The girl follows, but the woman, unpersuaded, remains seated. Allori's Fortuna buona has made the hard ascent and stands atop a rocky mound. Bronzino would use the nude Fortuna buona, complete with streaming forelock, in his Allegory of Happiness, painted for Francesco in 1567.

Consumption and Modernity: Havel’s Relevance to the West

However, Havel is careful to indicate that his criticism of the closed Communist systems of Central Europe does not simply exonerate Western liberal democracies. In his essay entitled, “Politics and Conscience,” Havel writes, “[W]ith respect to the relation of western Europe to the totalitarian systems, no error could be greater than […] a failure to understand the totalitarian systems for what they are—a convex mirror of all modern civilization” (1984, 259).11 For Havel, both post-totalitarianism and liberal democracy are increasingly dominated by modern, impersonal mechanisms of power that issued from a tradition of Western rationalism and metaphysics—the notion that human rationality may effectively understand and capture the essence of Being.12 Havel asserts that the West, too, operates within a kind of hegemonic ideological framework that is used to justify actions of governments and individuals alike: military intervention in the name of democracy or human rights, and self-interested individualism and consumerism in the name of personal freedom are but two examples. Moreover, Havel argues that the West also employs improper mechanisms of societal control: “People [in traditional parliamentary democracies] are manipulated in ways that are infinitely more subtle and refined than the brutal methods used in the post-totalitarian societies,” ways that are hidden within “the omnipresent dictatorship of consumption, production, advertising, commerce, consumer culture, and all that flood of information” (1978, 208).

Specifically, Havel considers consumerism to be the clearest extension of the flawed ”anthropomorphic” impulse of Western metaphysics. For Havel, the industrial-consumer society, while allowing us countless freedoms and choices, undermines our ability to control the most important elements of our lives, such as true political freedom and self-development. Havel observes wryly, “[A]ll people are actually offered is a chance freely to choose which washing machine or refrigerator they want to buy” (1975, 60). Havel sees in consumerism a denial of responsibility, and, as such, a source of the crisis of identity: “A person who has been seduced by the consumer value system […] and who has no roots in the order of being, no sense of responsibility for anything higher than his own personal survival, is a demoralized person” (1978, 153).

In Havel’s plays, consumption appears not only as an activity of material accumulation and an elevation of status, but also as a symbolic compensation for unfulfilled human emotional connections and, indeed, for identity itself. For example, in Unveiling, the character Michael unwittingly expresses exactly this sentiment:

One really shouldn't be indifferent to what one eats, one shouldn't be indifferent to what one eats on, and what one eats with, what one dries oneself with, what one wears, what one takes a bath in, what one sleeps on. And once any of these things starts to matter, you'll find that something else suddenly matters, too, and then another thing gets you, and so a whole sort of chain of things develops—[…] which then in effect translates itself into your relationships with other people! (Havel 1993, 219)

This quotation exemplifies the way in which consumption becomes constitutive of identity and simultaneously undermines interpersonal relations. Havel explores how the self-serving behavior of material accumulation—of course, always hidden by ideological justifications of higher culture, sensibility, etc.—diverts our attention from the well being of others. In other words, the continual struggle to make and remake our material identities impoverishes our ability to engage responsibly in public life. Rather than relating to one another as human beings, we are encouraged by the system to interact as consumers. Because the repetition of this cycle allows us only to “live within a lie,” we become passive and disengaged from social and political life.

In this way, Havel effectively shifts the level of critique from the abstract to the concrete, from Patočka and Levinas to the greengrocer and the absurdist play. By identifying how the ideological system confronts us tangibly in our daily lives, Havel enables average citizens to begin to think critically about the coercion of closed systems. One of Havel’s main theses states, “Individuals can be alienated from themselves only because there is something in them to alienate" (1978, 148). This self-alienation thus contains within it the prospect of resistance. Living in truth—as the opposition to living within a lie—is an everyday affirmation of authentic human responsibility and open to each individual:

It can be any means by which a person or a group revolts against manipulation: anything from a letter by intellectuals to a workers' strike, from a rock concert to a student demonstration […]. If the suppression of the aims of life is a complex process, and if it is based on the multifaceted manipulation of all expressions of life then, by the same token, every free expression of life indirectly threatens the post-totalitarian system politically, including forms of expression to which, in other social systems, no one would attribute any potential political significance, not to mention explosive power. (Havel 1978, 150-1)

It is this sentiment that ultimately gives true meaning to the title of Havel’s essay, “The Power of the Powerless.” Havel encourages his readers to appreciate the difference between our modern world, largely constructed by ideological and technological certainty, and the world rooted naturally in personal, experiential knowledge. He advises us to regain our authentic human identities guided by a continuing dialogue with the order of Being, as they are the only source of resistance to the impersonal mechanisms that seek to govern our lives. As he writes, “For the real question is whether the brighter future is really always so distant. What if, on the contrary, it has been here for a long time already, and only our own blindness and weakness has prevented us from seeing it around us and within us, and kept us from developing it?” (Havel 1978, 214).
