The right way forward on space exploration by James Cameron :: What do rockets burn for fuel? Money. Money that is contributed by working families who have mortgages and children who need braces. And why do the American people support our efforts in space? Because they still believe, to some extent or another, in that shining dream of exploring other worlds. So it could be said that rockets really run on dreams :: via NASA Watch

learned two new things! CxP & PoR. reason i don't mind Bernanke, Geithner, Summers, etal: if POTUS had put in a different, more appealing team & there were problems we might've ended up with BGSetal anyway. how does this apply to the management team of NASA's current program of record? i do get a disconnect comparing finance sector w/ spaceflight sector. example one: banks are still sitting on toxic assets; two: they are still paying bonuses to retain talent. whazzup? it appears only certain types of talent are being protected • yes, looking at auto industry in the sense that not all jobs can be saved — auto lost lots of jobs so is there a similar loss in spaceflight? — but i get this pancaking collapse that could be better controlled? i could be wrong: but i also get the sense that PoR leadership is getting the off with their heads treatment that other industries have avoided • more verbosity of course, but batts getting low & cheezburger calling, so i'll just leave things for now with 7-letter word: torture.

key point for me from Obama @ Republican Retreat is negotiation (imho, financial meltdown suggested an open (if somewhat innovative) negotiation table with all participating that could bypass class warfare bogdowns): So all I'm saying is we've got to close the gap a little bit between the rhetoric and the reality. I'm not suggesting that we're going to agree on everything, whether it's on health care or energy or what have you, but if the way these issues are being presented by the Republicans is that this is some wild-eyed plot to impose huge government in every aspect of our lives, what happens is you guys then don't have a lot of room to negotiate with me. I mean, the fact of the matter is is that many of you, if you voted with the administration on something, are politically vulnerable in your own base, in your own party. You've given yourselves very little room to work in a bipartisan fashion because what you've been telling your constituents is, "This guy's doing all kinds of crazy stuff that's going to destroy America." And I -- I would just say that we have to think about tone. It's not just on your side, by the way. It's -- it's on our side as well. This is part of what's happened in our politics, where we demonize the other side so much that when it comes to actually getting things done, it becomes tough to do.

with Chalogne at Cycle #16 endpoint i do see how my little dog might show up in this fight & its name is Orion • one of the best phone calls i ever got was two guys with a plan to restart a failing business model; what do you think about this gwen? • well heck. looking at the other players on this beach & the crap they're moving up i know one thing: we can get crap off this beach too! just because. but please, give me something to sell here because everybody's at this table & something can be worked out. because maybe the first step in Saving Private Orion is the very thing we complain the president isn't providing—like um, defining the Saving Private Orion mission. (work on that while i finish up typing & proofing Eisenhower on D-Day).

hai! you guys made my day :), i'll get Frank the spinach panini at starbucks. (blurring the lines..., so right so true ~ stay you).

got caught up watching The Insider, which might be one of my favorite Pacino movies • woke up this morning thinking of XIIIth & AA reaction ("condemnation", "aversion") to homosexuality & things clicked a different way

first heard of Wigand from Marie Brenner's The Man Who Knew Too Much • always thought the great thing about Wigand was that (eventually) he taught American kids chemsitry • there's a couple of great scenes in the movie, my favorite is Wigand at the hotel & Bergman in the middle of the ocean ~ watch that backdrop behind Wigand; what is it saying about reality? ~ there's a lot of negotiating going on & that scene captures the cost of the obstacle course of how news (in its precise sense) gets disseminated.

Powerful Nor'easter poised to pound Washington D.C. with 2 feet of snowWinter storms of 2009–2010February 5th is National Weatherperson's Day : Thank a weatherperson for their public service. The date commemorates the birth of John Jeffries, a Boston physician and one of America's first weathermen. He was born on Feb 5, 1745 (or 1744 according to some references) and kept weather records from 1774 to 1816Head of NOAA urges public safety NWS warns of dangerous conditions tonightCNN Transcripts : Extreme weather reports from Rob Marciano, Reynolds Wolf & Chad Myers : (something worth noting from Myers ~ may impact shoveling later, so don't get fooled, take it slow it sounds like): But here's the thing: a lot of this, the first 15 inches of snow will pack down to about 7, because of how much moisture is in this snow. We usually take -- the computer's only don't give us snow, they give us how much water's coming out. And we multiply that number of water times ten, ten inches, because of one inch of water will give you ten inches of snow. You can't multiply this storm by ten, maybe by six. So that first one inch of rain, which some forecasters are saying, "Oh, it will be 10." Not -- not -- there's no way it's going to be 10. It's going to be 5 or 6, and it's going to be packed down, and it's going to be very heavy… But watch when you move 5 inches of mess, because it weighs the same as 15 inches of snow.

What the Fog Wrought: The Revolution's Dunkirk, August 29, 1776, by David McCullough, from What Ifs? Of American History: Eminent Historians Imagine What Might Have Been :: For all that can be said for a deterministic view of history—for the inevitability of what T.S. Eliot called "vast impersonal forces"—chance and luck (two related but altogether different phenomena) also play a part. How else to explain the events of mid-August 1776, when, badly beaten at the Battle of Long Island (Brooklyn, actually), George Washington and his small army faced what seemed to be certain annihilation by a larger British army, one of the world's best. As David McCullough points out, nothing less than the independence of the United States was at stake. But the whims of weather were beyond prediction then, as they often still are. Perhaps in this case the most you can say about inevitability is that Washington almost always had the knack of seizing the right moment.

Troops in substantial numbers had still to be evacuated and at the rate things were going it appeared day would dawn before everyone was safely removed. But again "the elements" interceded, this time in the form of pea-soup fog. · It was called "a peculiar providential occurrence," "manifestly providential," "very favorable to the design," "an unusual fog," "a friendly fog," "an American fog." "So very dense was the atmosphere," remembered Benjamin Tallmadge, "that I could scarcely discern a man at six yards' distance." And as daylight came, the fog held, covering the entire operation no less than had the night. · Tallmadge would recall that when the rear guard at last received word to pull out, and "we very joyfully bid those trenches adieu," the fog was still "as dense as ever." · When we reached Brooklyn ferry, the boats had not returned from their last trip, but they very soon appeared and took the whole regiment over to New York; and I think [I] saw General Washington on the ferry stairs when I stepped into one of the last boats… · When the fog lifted at about seven o'clock, the British saw to their astonishment that the Americans had vanished.

i the CWG Snow Fiends! Snowmageddon rages on: Historic totals mounting this thread made me wonder about dry slots so googled: The Perfect Snowstorm ...for a snow lover... 3) No dry slots occurring during the storm. Big storms often produce dry slots over large regions where precipitation will shut off during the height of a storm. We were dry slotted during the Blizzard of '96 that caused the snow to end for many hours. For snow lovers, it's painful to be in the dry slot of a major snowstorm BEWARE THE DDS (Dreaded Dry Slot) but bestest of all: Snowstorm Comments: Best of (they do them some good snow) You know it's a snowstorm when there's no Milk, TP, or Bread at the supermarket...but when shoppers have savaged the Broccoli aisle before the snow even starts… Snowbama weighs in From the AP and pool reports: President Barack Obama joins in calling the storm "Snowmageddon." Despite a fender bender on the way, his motorcade made it to the Capital Hilton so he could speak at the Democratic National Committee's winter meeting on Saturday. In his opening remarks, Obama thanked activists for being willing to brave the blizzard. The streets around the hotel were blocked by snow and police ahead of Obama's arrival. Other officials who stumbled into the hotel were caked in snow and ice. Obama said he saw a sign that said "Californians for Obama" - and he joked that "you guys aren't used to this." oh boy (happy weatherman day Jim Kosek!)

i do declare… Looks like we've had our glitch for this mission.

Pick us up now, Lord. Give us courage and hope for the future that lies ahead as we continue to be one people, under God, with liberty and justice for all. Amen. —Chaplain, Dr. William J. Carl III, First Presbyterian Church, Dallas, TX.

is the weather going to turn into a coin toss? flip a coin: called heads, got tails (1982 Quarter)

Coin flipping or coin tossing is the practice of throwing a coin in the air to resolve a dispute between two parties or otherwise choose between two alternatives. It is a form of sortition that by nature typically has only two possible outcomes.

Scorch & Zambo are Marines. (ain't that hard to know who i'd pick between two quarterbacks or two marines. just saying.)

Versus 2009 :: Here's the thing that makes life so interesting. The theory of evolution claims ‘only the strong shall survive.’ Maybe so… maybe so. But the theory of competition says just because they're the strong doesn’t mean they can’t get their asses kicked. That's right! See what every long shot, come-from-behind underdog will tell you is this: The other guy may, in fact, be the favorite. The odds may be stacked against you. Fair enough. But what the odds don’t know is this isn’t a math test. This is a completely different kind of test. One where passion has a funny way of trumping logic. So before you step up to the starting line, before the whistle blows and the clock starts ticking, just remember, out here the results don’t always add up. No matter what the stats may say and the experts may think and the commentators may have predicted, when the race is on all bets are off. Don’t be surprised if somebody decides to flip the script and take a pass on yelling "uncle". And then suddenly, as the old saying goes, we got ourselves a game.
