Flight Day #14 :: 756 :: KSC Landing

BOOYAH! hey .... C-SPAN 1 coverage. sweet. [+] Space Shuttle Endeavour glided in for a perfect landing at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., bringing to a close an International Space Station Assembly mission and concluding the flight of a teacher turned astronaut. Touchdown occurred at 12:32 p.m. EDT on runway 15 with STS-118 Commander Scott Kelly and Pilot Charles Hobaugh at the controls. The STS-118 crew also includes Mission Specialists Tracy Caldwell, Rick Mastracchio, Dave Williams, Barbara R. Morgan and Alvin Drew.

Official Landing Times: Main gear touchdown: 12:32:16 p.m. EDT || Nose gear touchdown: 12:32:29 p.m. EDT || Wheels stop: 12:33:20 p.m. EDT || Total miles: 5.3 million || Mission Elapsed time: 12 Days, 17:55:34 Hours.

[+] With STS-118 completed and the crew home safe, NASA Administrator Mike Griffin pointed to the success of the agency in assembling the International Space Station. "This is one of the great accomplishments of mankind," Griffin said. The orbiting laboratory is about 60 percent complete, and is about to undergo substantial additions in the next few months as new lab segments from Europe and Japan are added, along with a new node module. Kennedy Space Center Launch Director Mike Leinbach said Endeavour came through reentry in good shape. "It looked almost like a pristine vehicle," he said. The crew of Endeavour is to hold a press conference at about 5:30 p.m. EDT. The event will be broadcast on NASA TV. [+] A couple hours after landing back at Kennedy Space Center, the crew of STS-118 spoke enthusiastically about their 13 days in orbit and work on the International Space Station. "It was a great experience and the space station is really, I think, a stepping stone to going back to the moon and on to Mars some day," commander Scott Kelly said. Teacher-turned-astronaut Barbara Morgan said she is still getting used to gravity again, but that spaceflight was a great experience that she hopes more teachers get to share in. "The flight was absolutely wonderful," she said. "I felt like I was upside-down the whole first day." Canadian astronaut Dave Williams said the thrill never gets dull. "It's truly the ride of a lifetime," Williams said of the launch Aug. 8. "Look over your shoulder and you can see Hurricane Dean." The flight delivered a new segment to the International Space Station, along with 5,800 pounds of supplies and equipment. As far as the ding in a couple of heat shield tiles, Kelly said it did not bother him much. "I was a little bit underwhelmed by the size of the gouge," he said. "To see it, it looked rather small."

[+] "Welcome back Dave and congratulations to you and the crew of STS-118 on a successful mission," said the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Canadian Space Agency. "Mission STS-118 was a visible demonstration of Canadian innovation and excellence with three flawless spacewalks performed by Canadian Astronaut Dave Williams and our Canadian technology, all contributing significantly to the ongoing efforts to construct and use the International Space Station." added Minister Prentice [...] Canada is preparing for its next space mission as Dextre, the third and final element of the Mobile Servicing System, part of Canada's contribution to the International Space Station, will be delivered to the station. Dextre will be flown to the space station in February 2008 during mission STS-123. + CSA Mission STS-118

AQ 337 = SIMON AND GARFUNKEL = CONFIGURATIONISM ([+] an approach to psychology that emphasizes the importance of AQ-531 CONFIGURATIONAL PROPERTIES; [+] configurationism Ruth BENEDICT made the notion of configurationism famous in her book Patterns of culture (1934a), when she portrayed cultures as analogous to human personalities; that is, each culture is understood as a coherent, complex, unique entity, bound together by highly patterned internal relationships producing multiple levels of significance. These levels of significance could be interpreted by the anthropologist to produce a consistent and convincing portrait of the configuration and of the people within it. Even knowing only some aspects of the configuration would allow the prediction of others. CULTURE, then, could be known much as a person could be known, and each culture could be appreciated on its own grounds, as aesthetic and harmonious, or as discordant and neurotic. Configurationism clearly reflected Benedict's training with Franz BOAS in the German tradition of aesthetic ethnography that was descended from Herder. But also influential was the holism of Gestalt psychology (W. Köhler 1929), the humanistic psychology of Harry Stack Sullivan (1964), and the romantic philosophy of Wilhelm Dilthey (1961). Benedict's configurationist approach foundered on questions about her underlying assumption of coherence; nor was it clear exactly what aspects of the culture were essential, and which were purely secondary or ephemeral. Benedict also made use of literary-psychoanalytic models to give her configurations a skeleton, and these were not accepted as adequate by many anthropologists. However, configurationism retains a strong hold on the anthropological imagination. For instance, Clifford GEERTZ (1973), like Benedict, emphasized the uniqueness and inner harmony of each cultural system, although he repudiated the psychological armature that was essential to Benedict's work. Outside anthropology, the cultural theorist Norbert Elias (1978) has had considerable success with an avowedly configurationist approach that unites psychoanalytic sophistication with the study of long-term historical processes in European cultures. West Navarre Intermediate School — Navarre, Florida :: A group of third graders chose the name becaues the word's meanings "symbolize the spirit of international cooperation embodied by the ISS as a whole and the role played by the Connector Nodes—the pieces that bring them all together." They also cite Harmonia, the Greek goddess of order, writing that "if she were real, we are sure that Harmonia would approve of the international cooperation personified by the ISS which certainly helps to spread peace and order." THE ORACULAR TABLETS OF OPHION :: [Harmonia to Aphrodite:] 'I have oracles of history on seven tablets, and the tablets bear the names of the seven planets. The first has the name of revolving Selene [the Moon]; the second is called of Hermes [planet Mercury], a shining tabled of gold, upon which are wrought all the secrets of law; the third has your name [Aphrodite the planet Venus], a rosy tablet, for it has the shape of your star in the East; the fourth is Helios [the Sun], cental navel of the seven travelling planets; the fifth is called Ares [the planet Mars], red and fiery; the sixth is called Phaethon [the planet Jupiter], the planet of Kronides [Zeus]; the seventh shows the name of highmoving Kronos [the planet Saturn]. Upon these, ancient Ophion has engraved in red letters all the divers oracles of fate for the universe. But since you ask me about the directing laws, this prerogative I keep for the eldest of cities. Whether then Arkadia is first or Hera’s city [Argos], whether Sardis be the oldest, or even Tarsos celebrated in song be the first city, or some other, I have not been told. The tabled of Kronos will teach you all this, which first arose, which was coeval with Dawn.’ —Nonnus, Dionysiaca 41.339 (cf. Endymion)

It's funny. This is my fourth lead, but I see myself saying this every time. I know all the other ones have been pretty exciting, but this has got to be the most exciting one. They're all completely critical to the success, all the way up to completing our president's vision, going to the next step. But they just seem to get more and more complicated as they go along. —STS-120 Lead Shuttle Flight Director Rick LaBrode
