when i read the bible several years ago i didn't know much about marxism & liberation theology. however, re-reading Jacob's story (Genesis 25-32) it's hard not to think about labor & wages. the whole ringstraked, speckled, & grisled idea involves Jacob trying to get fair wages from Laban who's been cheating him for years.

08529 תלע : tala‘ : scarlet; only appears once in OT, Nahum 2:3 The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet <08529>: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.

02921 טלא : tala’ : to patch, spot, be spotted, be coloured; appears 8 times in OT, four times in Genesis 30: ringstraked, speckled, and spotted <02921>.

01261 ברד : barod : spotted, marked; appears twice in Genesis 31 during Jacob's dream where leaping cattle are described by an angel as "ringstraked, speckled, and grisled <01261>"; & twice in Zechariah 6 describing a vision of four chariots. barod comes from 01258 barad, to hail; only appears once in the OT, Isaiah 32:19 When it shall hail <01258>, coming down on the forest; and the city shall be low in a low place.

Isaiah 32 contains a prophecy of the Messiah & begins, Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment ... The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful ... But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand .... Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come (which may refer to the first fruits of the harvest) ... Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest; Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field; And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever; And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places; When it shall hail, coming down on the forest; and the city shall be low in a low place.

The Mayor of Casterbridge/Chapter 17 :: In spite of this praiseworthy course the Scotchman's trade increased. Whether it were that his northern energy was an overmastering force among the easy-going Wessex worthies, or whether it was sheer luck, the fact remained that whatever he touched he prospered in. Like Jacob in Padan-Aram, he would no sooner humbly limit himself to the ringstraked-and-spotted exceptions of trade than the ringstraked-and-spotted would multiply and prevail.

Reading Hegel :: I had read fragments of Hegel’s philosophy, the grotesque craggy melody of which did not appeal to me. Once more I wanted to dive into the sea, but with the definite intention of establishing that the nature of the mind is just as necessary, concrete and firmly based as the nature of the body. My aim was no longer to practise tricks of swordsmanship, but to bring genuine pearls into the light of day. —Karl Marx, from a letter to his father, 10 November 1837

google :: margarites hail pearl

Thomas Usk, The Testament of Love :: MARGARITAE (Pearl shellfish) belong to the class of hard-shelled mollusks and live in shells lined with a pearly iridescence. When they come to the shoreline, these oysters absorb the dew that descends from the heavens; if it is a clear morning dew and the body of the oyster is well cleansed and vigorous, the creature conceives and forms a pearl from this absorbed dew, and the product is well rounded and shot through with a resplendent whiteness that rivals the color of the moon. If it is an evening dew produced in overcast weather, and the body of the oyster is poorly cleansed and defective, the shellfish conceives and forms a dirty pearl; up to now a pearl has not been found to exceed half an ounce in weight. Pearls are called "uniones" because at most two are found together in the same shell, but in most instances only one is found. If the oyster is in a state of fear from lightning, hail, or some other reason while the seed-pearl is developing, the final pearl will be somewhat flattened from its usual sphericity and lacking in its customary color. While still in the water, a pearl is soft in consistency, but after exposure to air it hardens to a stony durability. Oysters emerge in droves to absorb the pearl-inducing dew. Pearls that are dropped into vinegar grow soft and eventually dissolve

The Maypole :: The word "margarine" is derived from the Greek word "margarites', meaning "a pearl", owing to the pearl-like globules of the first-known margarine

The Tale of the Damsel Tohfat al-Kulub and the Caliph Harun al-Rashid :: 1001 Nights :: Then he arose and opening a chest, brought out therefrom striped clothes, [FN#153] netted with jewels and great pearls and other costly gems and said to her, "In the name of Allah, don these, O my lady Tohfah." So she arose and donned that dress and veiled herself and went up with Ishak to the palace of the Caliphate, where he made her stand without, whilst he himself went in to the Prince of True Believers (with whom was Ja'afar the Barmaki) and kissing the ground before him, said to him, "O Commander of the Faithful, I have brought thee a damsel, never saw eyes of seer her like for excellence in singing and touching the lute; and her name is Tohfah."

The Fetishism of Commodities and the Secret Thereof :: So far no chemist has ever discovered exchange value either in a pearl or a diamond.
