first heard of Thalweg when i came across Hussein talking about the significance of Shatt al Arab in 1990, eight days before Iraq invaded Kuwait:
HUSSEIN: If we could keep the whole of the Shatt al Arab, our strategic goal in our war with Iran, we will make concessions [to the Kuwaitis]. But, if we are forced to choose between keeping half of the Shatt and the whole of Iraq [i.e. including Kuwait], then we will give up all of the Shatt to defend our claims on Kuwait to keep the whole of Iraq in the shape we wish it to be. What is the United States' opinion on this? [+][+][+]

THALWEG is an English word compounded from German Thal (valley) + Weg (way); "signifies the line of greatest slope along the bottom of a valley, i.e. a line drawn through the lowest points of a valley in its downward slope. It thus marks the natural direction (the profile) of a watercourse. The thalweg is almost always the line of fastest flow in any river"; "The thalweg principle is the principle of determining national boundaries at the thalweg of a river separating two states".
ABSTRACT :: Alluvial River Response to Active Tectonics :: Alluvial rivers are influenced by changes of valley floor slope, and therefore deformation of the valley floor by active tectonics can cause pattern change, aggradation, and degradation. Canals have been abandoned owing to uplift in Iran, and major floods and avulsive shift of the Indus River has been attributed to earthquake-generated dams and tilting of the Indus Valley. Streams crossing the Monroe uplift in Louisiana and the Wiggins uplift in Mississippi show pattern, gradient, and depth changes that indicate that these uplifts are active. The Mississippi River shows effects of the Lake County and Monroe uplifts. Slow deformation of a valley floor will eventually affect channel stability. This poses hazards to structures on or near the river banks as well as to bridges and pipeline and powerline crossings. Navigation may be impaired, and the variability of overbank flooding~along the river can cause legal problems.

Wikipedia Iran-UK crisis article mentions Richard Schofield, expert in international boundaries at King's College London: "Iran and Iraq have never agreed to a boundary of their territorial waters. There is no legal definition of the boundary beyond the Shatt al-Arab".

ABSTRACT :: Old Boundaries for a New State by Richard Schofield :: This paper chronicles critical chapters in the delimitation of Iraq's boundaries with Iran and Kuwait, paradoxically in the period preceding the Great War. For such territorial definition took place before the Iraqi state was even formed, yet it would create many of the strategic problems that Iraq has since faced with its two neighbors. Narrowing the Perso-Ottoman land frontier in the mid-19^th century had been an Anglo-Russian project, though it was largely Britain's interests that proved conclusive in its final settlement in 1914. The discovery of oil in Persia in the first decade of the 20^th century added a new dimension to settling the southern end of the frontier along the Shatt al-Arab river. Britain's interest in maintaining the Persian Gulf as a British lake in order to defend British India was the chief determinant of the contemporary territorial definition of Kuwait. In shaping these territorial limits and dealing with the Ottoman Empire, Britain could not have realized that it was essentially creating the explosive contemporary strategic issue of Iraqi access to the Persian Gulf. With hindsight, it seems that Britain bequeathed to the Iraqi state an eastern question of its own.
