Prince of Cups @ 21-Feb-2007 @ 07:58 PM (03:58 UT, 22-Feb)

The Prince of Cups represents the airy part of Water. On the one hand, elasticity, volatility, hydrostatic equilibrium; on the other hand, the catalytic faculty and the energy of steam. He rules from the 21st degree of Libra to the 20th degree of Scorpio [...] In the Yi King, the airy part of Water is represented by the 61st hexagram, Kung Fu. This is one of the most important figures in the Yi: it "moves even pigs and fish, and leads to great good fortune''. Its dignities and correspondences are manifold and great; for it is also a "big Li", the trigram of Sol formed by doubling the lines. By shape it suggests a boat, but also the geomantic figure of Cancer, Saturn in Capricornus [+][+][+][+][+][+][+].

Via Combusta: Libra 15° to Scorpio 15°

The answer to the puzzle surrounding the true meaning of the Via Combusta was revealed by Al Biruni in his work, The Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology, written in 1029AD in Ghaznah. On page 317, number 514, he wrote: The combust way is the last part of Libra and the first of Scorpio. These two signs are not congenial to the Sun and the Moon on account of the obscurity and ill-luck connected with them and because each of them is the fall of one of the luminaries. They also contain the two malefics, the one by exaltation (Libra, Saturn) the other by house (Scorpio, Mars). The peculiarity however which has given the name muhtariq is that the exaltation of Saturn is near the fall of the Sun being on the one hand and that of the Moon on the other, while the adjacent parts of both signs are occupied by terms of Mars.

A note on the via

It has been noted that the Moon in the via combusta and Venus and Moon when poorly dignified are yet strong and magically potent although one does need to take care. The via has been likened to the cosmic menses of the lunar cycle, analogous to pms. This appears reasonable yet the Moon in the via in question charts suggests an airy influence that is also to be noted with the Moon in other Air signs but to a lesser extent. It is probably safe to adopt the cosmic menstrual cycle view but to also place it in the perspective of dignity (which is also a cyclical context).

Formula of the A.'.A.'.

During every lunar month the Moon passes through the entire Zodiac. It has been noticed by astrologers that when the Moon hits Scorpio nothing can be predicted successfully. This was put down to unfortunate stars in the constellation of Scorpio. This is the uninitiated view. As was seen in The New Equinox/British Journal of Magick Vol.V No.4, Libra and Scorpio are the signs of the menses in woman, when the unfertilised seed is expelled by the menstruum solvent (Solve et Coagula). In the mundane world whatever is started at this point of the Zodiac will not come to fruition. Anything can happen except that which is expected (the seed) [+][+].

Saturn-Neptune Cycle

The decision of the IAU [Pluto] was made at the same time as the Saturn-Neptune opposition, an alignment which is having a large influence in many different parts of our lives, individually as well as globally. Saturn and Neptune engage in a 36-year cycle, meaning that they go from conjoining in the sky to opposing to conjoining approximately every 36 years. During this cycle, the planet of form, organization, boundaries, and measurement—Saturn—and the planet of formlessness, imagination, merging, and intuition—Neptune—must learn to deal with each other. Because these two planets are opposite one another right now, their energies do not easily blend or merge. Like two individuals locked in a staring contest, they tend to build tension and rejection of each other’s energies, becoming even more exclusively locked into their own identities. It is no accident that Pluto, which tapped a deep part of the collective psyche—whether one believes in astrology or not—received from astronomers the equivalent of a numbered orange concert wristband and a place in the Kuiper Belt mosh pit along with all the other punk rocks. Astrologers, on the other hand, understand Pluto’s symbolic and mythic value, and know that it should be up on the stage wearing a silk bandanna and playing awesome power chords on an ear-splitting electric guitar—and certainly not stuck down in the mosh pit [+][+][+][+][+].

Saturn-Neptune and the Desert of the Real

From late 2005 through 2007, the planets Neptune and Saturn will form an opposition to each other. This particular alignment will be the most important alignment of the latter half of this decade, informing the cultural dynamics as we head into the more turbulent, chaotic potentials of the next decade. This essay will aspire to illuminate the many archetypal motifs associated with this alignment—both its problematic and constructive possibilities [...] Although The Matrix expressed several planetary archetypes in an extraordinary way, the main thematic scaffolding of the story—the predominate storyline of the film—was highly indicative of the Saturn-Neptune gestalt.

Baudrillard, Christ & Reality: Reading the Matrix as a Postmodernist Statement

Eight minutes and thirty seconds into "The Matrix", Neo is visited by four people seeking a disk. Neo takes their money and closes the door. He walks across his apartment, picks up a book, and opens it. That book is Jean Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation. The book has been hollowed out to be used as a hiding-place. (Applying Baudrillard's definition, this actually transforms it into a book-simulacrum.) The chapter he opens it to is "On Nihlism", in which Baudrillard writes: If being a nihilist is carrying out, to the unbearable limit of hegemonic systems, this radical trait of derision and violence, this challenge that the system is summoned to answer through its own death, then I am a terrorist and nihilist in theory as the others are with their weapons. Theoretical violence, not truth, is the only resource left to us.

Welcome to the Desert of the Real

Welcome to the Desert of the Real is the text from which Slavoj Zizek read from on November 14, 2001 in his lecture, "Passions of the Real: Violence In The XXth Century" at Jack Tilton Gallery in NYC. It is, in general, Zizek's reflections on the destruction of the WTC and his perception of the reactions from both the Right and the Left, from his Leftist perspective. From this vantage, he attempts to find the source of these Western "First World" reactions, while probing the initial US reaction within the psychological framework of American film, television and journalistic media.

Castles in the Air :: Thoreau, MacLean & Rameau

In presenting this engaging rogue to my readers, I feel that I owe them, if not an apology, at least an explanation for this attempt at enlisting sympathy in favour of a man who has little to recommend him save his own unconscious humour. In very truth my good friend Ratichon is an unblushing liar, thief, a forger—anything you will; his vanity is past belief, his scruples are non-existent.

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.

Extravagant hopes and plans that will never be carried out: "I told him he should stop building castles in the air and train for a sensible profession."

And if she asks you why you can tell her that I told you that I'm tired of castles in the air; I've got a dream I want the world to share and castle walls just lead me to despair.

 • Executive Decision, action film, released on Friday, March 15, 1996 [...] German title Einsame Entscheidung [... hijackers plan to detonate DZ-5 bomb over U.S. airspace ...] At the Pentagon, a plan is worked out that will involve a mid-air transfer on a commando team onto the hijacked airliner using an experimental "Remora" aircraft [...] The film's plot device of a stealth fighter linking with a civilian airliner may have its roots in a F-117 field test, conducted by the famous "Skunk Works". In the test, a "red-eye" transcontinental flight was picked at random by Skunk Work engineers. The test involved flying an F-117 "Have Blue" fighter just below and behind the selected airliner. Engineers then watched radar screens for the airliner's reaction. If the airliner deviated from its flight path, the engineers would assume that the airliner's anti-collision radar system had detected the stealth fighter. According to the story, the unknowing airliner stayed on its preset flight path, as the invisible fighter plane veered off, returning to its test site [...] Grant and the commandos realize they are about to be shot down, and frantically work out a way to communicate with the jets using the plane's taillights and Morse code [...] The movie is similar to the 9/11 attacks as it depicts a novel idea of aircraft hijacking with the intention to use the hijacked aircraft as a suicide weapon to inflict massive casualties, as opposed to the conventional purposes of taking hostages in return for ransom or other demands. It was shot 5 years prior to 9/11/2001.

 • Samuel Morse, painter of portraits and historic scenes, and co-inventor (with Alfred Vail) of the Morse Code [...] well-known as an active defender of America's institution of slavery, considering it to be divinely sanctioned. In his treatise "An Argument on the Ethical Position of Slavery," he wrote: My creed on the subject of slavery is short. Slavery per se is not sin. It is a social condition ordained from the beginning of the world for the wisest purposes, benevolent and disciplinary, by Divine Wisdom. The mere holding of slaves, therefore, is a condition having per se nothing of moral character in it, any more than the being a parent, or employer, or ruler.

 • Remoras or suckerfish are elongate brown fish in order Perciformes and family Echeneidae [...] commonly found attached to sharks, manta rays, whales and turtles, (hence the common names sharksucker, whalesucker) [...] The relationship between remoras and their hosts is most often taken to be one of commensalism, specifically phoresy. The host they attach to for transport gains nothing from the relationship, but also loses little. The remora benefits by using the host as transport and protection and also feeds on materials dropped by the host. There is some controversy over whether a remora's diet is primarily leftover fragments, or actually the feces of the host.

Dow, Keeping up with the Joneses, Me and Mrs. Jones, Smith and Jones & the Whore of Asia

 • Dow Jones & Company, founded in 1882 by three reporters: Charles Dow, Edward Jones, and Charles Bergstresser [...] flagship publication, The Wall Street Journal [...] began publishing on July 8, 1889 [originally "Customer's Afternoon Letter" & named WSJ by Bergstresser]. While Charles Dow was known to be a rather calm, albeit tough journalist, Jones was a hot-tempered sort and the more visible of the two. He wrote and edited the bulletins while spending his nights looking for tips at the watering holes frequented by his racy friends, the wheelerdealers of Wall Street. Stillman writes of Jones that he was "excitable, emotional and you never knew when he might explode" in profanity [+][+][+][+].

Out of bounds planets: declinations :: Sun's path varies in declination between about 23°27' north of the equator at the Tropic of Cancer (summer solstice in the northern hemisphere) and 23°27' south at the Tropic of Capricorn (winter solstice). (See the Diagram at the end of this article.) When a celestial body goes beyond this maximum declination of 23°27', either north or south, it is considered out-of-bounds. [+] As you might guess, people with an out-of-bounds planet tend to know no boundaries and accept no limits. Often there's no stopping them. This can result in boundless creativity and success, allowing the native to go way beyond the potential that one might normally expect. For example, Albert Einstein who has an out-of-bounds Moon in Sagittarius near the 6th house cusp, creatively provided a whole new paradigm in regards to time and space through his work on the theory of relativity. His philosophical beliefs weren't constrained by his era's prevailing system of thought. Natives with an out-of-bounds planet like to break the rules in this way and color outside the lines.

Declination :: The declination of the Sun (δ) is the angle between the rays of the sun and the plane of the earth equator. Since the angle between the earth axis and the plane of the earth orbit is nearly constant, δ varies with the seasons and its period is one year, that is the time needed by the earth to complete its revolution around the sun. When the projection of the earth axis on the plane of the earth orbit is on the same line linking the earth and the sun, the angle between the rays of the sun and the plane of the earth equator is maximum and its value is 23°27' . This happens at the solstices. Therefore δ = +23°27' at the northern hemisphere summer solstice and δ = -23°27' at the northern hemisphere winter solstice. When the projection of the earth axis on the plane of the earth orbit is perpendicular to line linking the earth and the sun, the angle between the rays of the sun and the plane of the earth equator is null. This happens at the equinoxes. Therefore δ is 0° at the equinoxes.

 • 2004: China's coming out party :: 2004 was the year when it happened. The world focused on China's new-found economic strength as never before. Its thirst for oil, outpouring of cheap exports and status as the world's most energetic economy - with growth topping 9% - all grabbed attention. China has moved into the mainstream this year, no longer seen as a remote place, but the next big thing. A sub-titled Mandarin movie - Zhang Yimou's 'Hero' - grossed $49m (£25m) at US box offices in its opening month. And Shanghai hosted its first Grand Prix on a circuit that stunned even the glamorous world of Formula One [...] But anyone who thought the world's fastest growing economy was a good place to make a fast buck on the stock market this year was wrong. China's financial markets have not roared ahead in tandem with its economy. The Shanghai Composite Index dropped 12% in 2004. In a ranking of 60 stock indexes, only Thailand did worse [...] "Emerging markets have outperformed developed markets by a very large margin, but Asia has underperformed and China has underperformed," says Mr Parker. "There's a disconnect between the hype and the reality" [...] "One feature of world capital markets is the amount of money sitting on the sidelines", says Mr Parker. Much of it, he thinks, is earmarked for China. And that does nothing to harm the market for China research. "The quality of research has slowly improved, which is logical because people are putting more resources in," says Mr Parker, a regular visitor to China for more than a decade. In his view, even the disappointments of 2004 have been "a bit of a wake-up call for investors" by forcing China-watchers to be less gung-ho and more specific.

12 THE PHI HEXAGRAM : Lingam of Yoni : All's disorder in the organum. We see the great gone, and the little come. —Liber 216.

The title suggest a rivalry between two types of church music. If the co-existence of plainchant and polyphony for a thousand years be thought of as a contest, it is on the whole friendly; with exceptions. As always happens the battles are more interesting than the humdrum ways of peace. At any rate we learn something from them. So they must be mentioned in their due proportion [...] In 946 or thereabouts was written the earliest known account of harmonized singing, the Hucbald system of parallel fifths and octaves. The word Organum was used for this, but we should do well to drop the name if we can find an adequate substitute, because Organum is far more often used in musical history for a type of music totally unlike Hucbald's, belonging to two and three hundred years later; a pedal point, as we should call it today, from a Gregorian theme with florid upper passages. How far Hucbald's plan was used is uncertain: some think it described contemporary practice, some think it was a mere speculation. We do in fact have references in England to accompaniment of the chant by voices; in about 980 at Winchester, where the troper they used is still preserved at Cambridge, and at the consecration of Ramsey Abbey in 991. At Glastonbury, about 1083, there was a riot because the Norman abbot Thurstan wanted to introduce some new music [...] What the new music was we do not know, of course; but in 1936 Gastoué put forth in La Revue du Chant grégorien the idea that it was organum or descant of some kind... 49 THE KO HEXAGRAM : Water of Sun : Change; men doubt until their dullness sees the change wisdom can foretell with ease. Changing line 5, Swift as a tiger - with the Yi for a guide! —Liber 216.

Each of the sixty-four hexagrams has a unique designation; its image (xiang) refers to a particular natural object and conveys the meaning of human events and activities. The Yijing thus has generated a special way to decipher the universe. It mainly incorporates three elements: xiang (images), shu (numbers), and li (meanings). They act as the mediators between heavenly cosmic phenomena and earthly human everyday life. From the Han dynasty through the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1912 CE), there was a consistent tension between two schools of thought: the school of xiangshu (images and numbers) and the school of yili (meanings and reasoning). At issue between them is how best to interpret the classics, particularly the Yijing. The question often was posed as: “Am I interpreting the six classics or are the six classics interpreting me?” For the school of Xiangshu the way to interpret the classics is to produce a figurative and numerological representation of the universe through xiang (images) and shu (numbers). It held that xiangshu are indispensable structures expressing the Way of heaven, earth and human being. Thus the school of Xiangshu takes the position that “I interpret the classics” by means of the images and numbers. The emphasis is on the appreciation of classics. The school of Yili, on the other hand, focuses on an exploration of the meanings of the classics on the basis of one’s own reconstruction. In other word, the school of Yili treats all classics as supporting evidence for their own ideas and theories. The emphasis is more on idiosyncratic new theories rather than the explanation of the classics. In what follows, our inquiry focuses on the legacy of the Xiangshu school.
