Sea Slugs, Anamnesis, Asteroid #7650 Kaname & the Namazu

Asteroid #7650 Kaname discovered 16-Oct-1990 by Japanese comet hunter Tsutomu Seki [1] at Geisei Observatory; named after amateur astronomer Kaname Nakamura.

Opisthobranchia :: (Greek opistho-, behind; brankhia, gills; gills to the right and behind the heart”) :: highly evolved gastropods, characterised by a single gill behind the heart, from which the subclass derives its name and two pairs of tentacles ... Many have brilliant colours, warning their predators to stay away. These wonderful creatures are hard to study, because their presence is so transitory, turning up, sometimes in very large numbers, at unexpected moments. Members of this order include what are commonly known as sea slugs and more specifically groups such as the canoe shells, sea butterflies, sea hares, and nudibranchs.

Sea Slug :: A tiny snail from the California seacoast has become an invaluable model for researchers to study the memory process and the workings of the human brain. A marine snail called the sea slug (see photo), which resembles a common pond snail without the protective shell, has been conditioned to respond to light flashes. The snail's response to the light flashes exhibits a primitive memory response. The sea slug is used for this type of research because it has the largest known, clearly identifiable brain cells in the animal kingdom. Researchers are thus able to use them to study the roles of brain cells and nerve impulses through the cells. The study of the snail's memory process, known as pattern recognition, may eventually help scientists develop computerized robots that may be used for a variety of tasks. The results found from this work in snails are currently the basis for more advanced studies in a mammalian species, rabbits, and in computers. After studying and recording the snail's ability to recognize patterns, researchers are translating the mechanics of pattern-recognition into its electronic components, developing primitive computer-based memory systems.

Catfish of the Month no. 99 Chinese Catfish, Namazu Silurus asotus :: The Namazu (the Japanese name for Silurus) is a giant catfish that lives in subterranean waters deep beneath the earth. On its head rests the kaname-ishi, a giant stone that resides in a shrine in the city of Kashima (near Tokyo) [because of its geographic location, the stone is often erroneously referred to as the Kashima stone]. The purpose of the stone is to pin the catfish still, but the weight of the stone alone is not sufficient for that. The Kashima Deity (Kashima daimyojin) must assist by pushing down on the kaname-ishi. The Kashima Deity sometimes falls asleep, is distracted, or has to leave for a meeting (in which case the deity Ebisu fills in, but Ebisu is frequently lax). Whatever the case, these lapses in vigilance cause the pressure on the namazu to be relaxed, giving it some freedom of movement. The thrashing of the namazu would result in an earthquake, the intensity of which depended on the vigor of its movements. Eventually, the earthquakes would subside and it was deemed that the Kashima Deity was back in control of things. The image (left) shows the Kashima Deity back in control of the Namazu after his temporary lapse, and all the lesser namazu (aftershocks) bow down in submission.

Namazu to kaname-ishi Namazu and the foundation stone :: Fires rage and the earth shakes while a tired-looking Ebisu – fi lling in for the Kashima Deity who is out of town to attend a meeting in Izumo – dozes. And what else is going on? For one thing, money (large gold coins) is falling from the burning city. The person on the left is the thunder deity. He seems to be engaging in a peculiar pastime of the less sophisticated Edoites – extreme farting, or “thunder farting.” The object of this new sport was to make more noise than your opponents. What might look like excrement are actually small drums, which emphasize the “thunder” element. The guy on horseback at right is the Kashima deity, rushing back from his meeting (with other major deities – they have a convention every year) in Izumo. So, the Kashima deity is out of town, his temporary replacement, the likeable but less diligent deity Ebisu, is sleeping on the job, and the thunder deity, who should be working, is off at the Ryôgoku Bridge literally farting around. And these incompetent deities have allowed a major disaster to unfold in the form of a fire-ravaged, post-earthquake Edo.

JAPAN (Mythaeum) :: The stone Kaname-ishi is in the centre of the earth, penetrating downward to the earth’s interior (Japan).

Earthquake Researches in Japan :: In Japan an old legend ascribes earthquakes to the movements of a creature called Jishin-mushi, "earthquake insect", having, as was related by Mr. O. Hattori, to the Asiatic Society of Japan in 1878, an oblong, scaly body, 10 legs, feet like a spider's, and the head of a dragon. On this head, however, at a place called Kashima, rests the Kaname rock, with which it is the duty of the Kami or deity of the district to keep the creature as quiet as possible. Hence the old earthquake couplet: No monster can move the Kaname rock, Though he tug at it never so hard, For ever it stands, resisting the shock; The Kashima-kami on guard. Later in history the Jishin-mushi became a monstrous cat-fish.

Be careful, young warrior, for some beings are not so benevolent as I". She then gives me the following names, arranged in two circles, PORPLONG, GORGOTHA, and ANL drawn around on eight points of two interlocked circles. PORPLONG is drawn on the left circle starting from the upperleft side and going deosil; GORGOTHA is drawn starting from the upperright side of the right circle and goes widdershins. ANL is drawn in the middle of the circles, A in the middle of the left circle, N in the vescicula piscis where the two circles cross, and L in the middle of the right circle. BABALON says nothing, but She implies that to contact that part of earth which I have called Her Neschamah, one should trace the two circles, starting with PORPLONG, then with GORGOTHA. The vescicula piscis in the centre is the portal through which the HAMIEN can reach the innermost secret part of the earth. I saw the portal before me, but as I had neither vibrated the names and I wished not to enter it yet, I declined Her offer to pass through. I decided to stop there and then.

•  Portae Lucis Method of Jean Dubuis :: The description of Portae Lucis involves three key components: astrological timing, passivity on the part of the aspirant, and the use of psychically loaded, or charged, talismans to assist in filling our energetic requirements for the experiment ... The technique described by Jean involves a fairly advanced level of astrology and its relationship to magic and alchemy. However, for the sake of simplicity and easier availability, the use of planetary genius’ can be substituted. However, information on both methods of timing will be explained, allowing members to chose the methods best for themselves. In addition to astrology and/or planetary genius’, the technique involves the use of A) classical Renaissance talismanic magic; B) a modified version of the Tree of Life C) a passive approach on the part of the experimenter, as opposed to a more active and involved system of mechanics. •  The Rite of the Milk of the Stars :: In the Supreme Pentagram Rite, the Spirit pentagram is drawn before the elemental pentagram is drawn, again with the relevant sigils and gestures. Also, words of power are vibrated during the several drawings. There is one point of contention about the gesture given during the Spirit pentagram. Regardie’s Stella Matutina versions indicate the use of the L.V.X signs while Crowley mentions the Portal signs of the Rending and Closing of the Veil. This latter is attributed in the Portal rite to the Spirit pentagrams. It is my preferred mode as the following description makes plain: With the forming of the Spirit pentagram the “Gate of the Element” is formulated. With the rending of the Veil the Gate is opened. The Elemental pentagram is then drawn beyond the Gate in the Realm of the Element as a beacon summoning the beings and forces of the element. The Grade Sign is given in salute to the approaching forces, indicating the practitioner’s being of the godly nature of the element. It has been my experience that this form works better for me than the LVX mode.

•  The Body of Light in the Western Esoteric Tradition :: Within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the first 3-3 ½ years is spent learning very basic magical procedures, coupled with the memorization and intellectual comprehension of a vast amount of qabalistic, alchemical, and astrological knowledge. The techniques given by Regardie in The Golden Dawn, such as the Supreme Rituals of the Pentegram and Hexegram, and the Rose+Cross Ritual, are not generally taught until the 5=5 Grade, or Adeptus Minor. On occasion, they may be given in the preliminary section, known as the Portal Grade. All magical tools are also constructed after being received into the Second Order, or Adeptus Minor grade. Only after this period are planetary rituals, talismans, and related techniques as seen in Regardie’s work undertaken.

A sub-lecture on the pillars within the First Knowledge Lecture explains the significance of this scene: The 125th Chapter is concerned with the entry of an initiate into the Hall of the Two Columns of Justice, and commenced with a most beautiful and symbolic description of Death, as a journey from the barren wilderness of Earth, to the Glorious Land which lies beyond. This chapter describes the introduction of the initiate into the Hall of Truth by ANUBIS, who, having questioned the aspirant, receives from him an account of his initiation, and is satisfied by his right to enter. He states that he has been taken into the ante-chamber of the temple and then stripped and blindfolded, he had to grope for the entrance to the Hall, and having found it, he was reclothed and anointed in the presence of the Initiated. He is then asked for the Pass-words and demands that his Soul should be weighed in the Great Balance of the Hall of Truth, whereupon ANUBIS again interrogates him concerning the symbolism of the door of the Hall, and his answers being found correct, ANUBIS says: "Pass on, thou knowest."

But the 6=5 is the actual raising of the candidate to a different plane himself. Persis got a picture of the candidate looking two ways. In the 6=5 he looks a different way for the first time.

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) yesterday predicted that abundant rainfall would trigger potentially devastating disasters, such as floods and mudflows, in not only the northern parts of the nation but also the south. All cities and counties announced last night that there will be no classes nor work today in their respective areas, except Kinmen County, which said schools and offices remain open today. Beginning yesterday afternoon, huge waves, heavy rains and powerful winds were observed in eastern Taiwan. In Hsinchu County, several roads connecting townships in mountainous areas, including remote Wufeng Township, were destroyed due to sudden landslides triggered by heavy rains. In several areas, schools and offices were ordered to close earlier yesterday. The CWB expected that Talim's center would pass over Taiwan from the eastern coastline between Ilan and Hualien counties. Forecasters said that Talim, with a radius of 250km, has been formed by solid-structure clouds. According to Hsieh Ming-chang, a division chief at the CWB's meteorology division, the weather in Taiwan will be significantly affected by the storm system. "We predict that violent gusts [of wind] could be experienced in the counties of Ilan and Hualien," Hsieh said. Forecasters said that people in Taiwan and its offshore islands, including Penghu, Green Island, Lanyu and Matsu, had to be on the alert for powerful winds.

It's a book about the horrific and bizarre behaviors of parasites. Zimmer says it's possible that the evolution of sex was influenced by parasites. And he ends the book with a very persuasive and colorful description of humans as parasites of Gaia (Earth). He warns against "killing" our host

"the most spectacular failure in bridge engineering history" collapsed because of the wind.

the brooklyn bridge was the first steel-wire suspension bridge; construction began in 1869 & the bridge was opened for use on 24-May-1883.

At the time the bridge was built, the aerodynamics of bridge building had not been worked out. Bridges were not tested in wind tunnels until the 1950s - well after after the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the 1940s. It is therefore fortunate that the open truss structure supporting the deck is by its nature less subject to aerodynamic problems. Roebling designed a bridge and truss system that was six times as strong as he thought it needed to be. Because of this, the Brooklyn Bridge is still standing when many of the bridges built around the same time have vanished into history and had been replaced.

Lessons From the Failure of a Great Machine

At the time the 1940 Narrows Bridge failed, the small community of suspension bridge engineers believed that lighter and narrower bridges were theoretically and functionally sound. In general, leading suspension bridge designers like David Steinman, Othmar Amman, and Leon Moisseiff determined the direction of the profession. Very few people were designing these huge civil works projects. The great bridges were extremely expensive. They presented immensely complicated problems of engineering and construction. The work was sharply limited by government regulation, various social concerns, and constant public scrutiny. A handful of talented engineers became pre-eminent. But, they had what has been called a "blind spot."

That "blind spot" was the root of the problem. According to bridge historian David P. Billington, at that time among suspension bridge engineers, "there seemed to be almost no recognition that wind created vertical movement at all."

The best suspension bridge designers in the 1930s believed that earlier failures had occurred because of heavy traffic loading and poor workmanship. Wind was not particularly important. Engineers viewed stiffening trusses as important for preventing sideways movement (lateral, or horizontal deflection) of the cables and the roadway. Such motion resulted from traffic loads and temperature changes, but had almost nothing to do with the wind.

This trend ran in virtual ignorance of the lessons of earlier times. Early suspension bridge failures resulted from light spans with very flexible decks that were vulnerable to wind (aerodynamic) forces. In the late 19th century engineers moved toward very stiff and heavy suspension bridges. John Roebling consciously designed the 1883 Brooklyn Bridge so that it would be stable against the stresses of wind. In the early 20th century, however, says David P. Billington, Roebling's "historical perspective seemed to have been replaced by a visual preference unrelated to structural engineering."

Just four months after Galloping Gertie failed, a professor of civil engineering at Columbia University, J. K. Finch, published an article in Engineering News-Record that summarized over a century of suspension bridge failures. In the article, titled "Wind Failures of Suspension Bridges or Evolution and Decay of the Stiffening Truss," Finch reminded engineers of some important history, as he reviewed the record of spans that had suffered from aerodynamic instability. Finch declared, "These long-forgotten difficulties with early suspension bridges, clearly show that while to modern engineers, the gyrations of the Tacoma bridge constituted something entirely new and strange, they were not new--they had simply been forgotten."

An entire generation of suspension bridge designer-engineers forgot the lessons of the 19th century. The last major suspension bridge failure had happened five decades earlier, when the Niagara-Clifton Bridge fell in 1889. And, in the 1930s, aerodynamic forces were not well understood at all.

"The entire profession shares in the responsibility," said David Steinman, the highly regarded suspension bridge designer. As experience with leading-edge suspension bridge designs gave engineers new knowledge, they had failed to relate it to aerodynamics and the dynamic effects of wind forces.

It was in Japan however where local adaptations to the business environment were strongest, and where the seeds of the next paradigm were sewn most strongly. Decimated by World War II, Japan's industry had to be built from the ground up. With few precious resources to draw upon, Japan had to rely on its own industrial creativity to rise to a level of competitiveness in commerce. Japan had done little prior to World War II concerning the discipline of quality. In the 1940's several important organizations were formed: Japan Management Association (1942), Japan Standards Association (1945), and the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) (1946); all aided in the reconstruction of the country (Nonaka, 1995). Americans on-loan from Bell Laboratories introduced JUSE members to Shewhart's 1931 book and the Z.1, 2, and 3 quality control standards, and several members became intrigued by the concepts. In 1950 JUSE Managing Director Kenichi Koyanagi requested Deming, who had been in Japan several year previous to aid in census-taking, to deliver lectures concerning quality control methods (Walton, 1986). Deming's courses included "Training of Quality Control Engineers and Statisticians in Industry" and several lectures for top management (Kilian, 1988). It was here that Deming told them "...they could capture markets the world over within five years" and reminiscing "They beat that prediction. Within four years, buyers all over the world were screaming for Japanese products" (Walton, 1986, p. 14).

haven't been to work in over two weeks. surprisingly, my sister (who lives up the block) has not been by at all. As we follow the spiritual development of an ink make, keeping in mind that what takes place does so not only physically, symbolically and mentally, but also within the soul, on a spiritual level within the ink maker. the final product of the process of ink making is a transformation, a fundamental integration of disparate aspects of the self: the physical, mental and spiritual. The basic material of iron gall ink is oak gall, which consists of wasp eggs and an oak tree. A wasp is considered an inverted symbol of the bee. The bee represents the Virgin Mary and goodness; its inversion means evil. The wasp, instead of spreading the word of God symbolically as the bee does by pollinating, just scavenges and lays its eggs. Oak trees, where the eggs are often laid, are the sacred tree of the Druids and as such, a symbol of deep and aged wisdom. The meeting of the two forms the gall. As the oak tree protects itself from the wasp eggs, symbolically it is trying to arrest the spread of evil through fibers of wisdom. They were not backward, merely focused, driven by myths of the loss and recovery of the god Telepinus, a myth which resembles in part the old Greek tale of Demeter's retreat from the world: Telepinus walked away and took grain, breeze...and satiation to the country, the meadow, the steppes. Telepinus went and lost himself in the steppe; fatigue overcame him. So grain and spelt thrive no longer. So cattle, sheep and man no longer breed. And even those with young cannot bring them forth. The vegetation dried up; the trees died and would bring forth no fresh shoots. The pastures dried up, the springs dried up. In the land famine arose so that man and gods perished from hunger. The great Sun-god arranged for a feast and invited the thousand gods. They ate, but they did not satisfy their hunger; they drank, but they did not quench their thirst. This myth is remarkable for a variety of reasons. First, due to its resemblance to the portion of the Epic of Gilgamesh where the gods themselves are almost destroyed due to the near-destruction of mankind and the resulting paucity of offerings. Secondly, the formula the thousand gods puts one in mind of animism, where all things are alive in spirit and the early sources of diverse mythologies such as the Greek idea that every river, tree and mountain had their own god or spirit, the Roman idea of the household gods, the sophisticated pantheon of the Vedic peoples of India. In addition, Telepinus' retreat reminds one of the flight of Demeter from the world following the kidnapping of Persephone by Hades (unfortunately, the actual reason for Telepinus' retreat is lost from the translation) to the part where the Storm-God of the Hittites, much like Zeus of the Greek pantheon, is moved to personally search for him. The similarity of these disparate concepts across even linguistic divides, from ancient Sumerian to Semitic Akkadian to Indo-European Hittite and beyond, indicates a primal transmission of a legacy so potent that it transcends even the powerful ability of language to dilute and dissolve concepts into itself, like the metaphorical salt in water the Upanishads would describe, an invisible and subtle essence.
