A 'Spellbound' moment

Josephine Kao, 10, wins bee on word from film

For 10-year-old Josephine Kao, it was truly a moment out of a movie. There she was Wednesday, one of two finalists in the 23rd annual California Central Valley Spelling Bee, and the trophy would be hers if she spelled just one more word correctly. "Cabotinage," intoned Bob Nathan, a local radio personality and event pronouncer. Josephine's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the word from one of her favorite movies - "Spellbound," the documentary about eight teens competing in the 1999 National Spelling Bee. It's an eponym meaning "behavior fitting a second-rate actor," after the French actor Cabotin, whose acting skills apparently left much to be desired. "I was like, 'I know this word!'" said Josephine, a home-schooled student from Roseville. "But I had to stay calm because if you get excited, you can stumble on a word and spell it wrong."

 • Spellbound (computer game) :: released in 1985 for the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC home computers. Versions for the Commodore 64 and the Atari 8-bit computers and an enhanced 128K Spectrum version with music and additional graphics were all released in 1986. It is the second game in the Magic Knight series and was programmed by David Jones. It was published by Mastertronic as part of their Mastertronic Added Dimension label. Magic Knight is transported to a castle with a collection of other characters and must rescue his friend Gimbal the wizard. Gimbal has become trapped by a self-inflicted "white-out" spell whilst trying to create a better-tasting rice pudding. Magic Knight must rescue Gimbal from his self-inflicted imprisonment and then ensure both he and the castle's other inhabitants are all returned to their correct time and place.

 • Spellbound (music album) :: Spellbound is the name of the 1991 pop album released by Paula Abdul. The album was an international success and spawned major radio hits with the singles "Rush, Rush," "The Promise of a New Day," "Blowing Kisses in the Wind," "Vibeology," and "Will You Marry Me?"

 • Spellbound (song) :: Written and performed by Siouxsie And The Banshees (1981) — When you think / your toys have gone beserk / it's an illusion / you cannot shirk / you hear laughter / cracking through the walls / it sends you spinning / you have no choice.

 • Spellbound (documentary) :: 2002 documentary about the National Spelling Bee ... nominated for the Academy Award for Documentary Feature. The movie is set in 1999 at the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. It followed eight competitors in the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The competitors were Harry Altman, Angela Arenivar, Ted Brigham, April DeGideo, Neil Kadakia, Nupur Lala, Emily Stagg, and Ashley White. The film's director was Jeffrey Blitz. Disney Theatrical is due to adapt the film for Broadway in 2006 ... Nupur Lala was the champion of the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee (as speller 165), spelling "logorrhea" to win. One of the words she spelled: cabotinage. L'image que nous donne Pierre Brasseur incarnant Frédérick Lemaître dans Les Enfants du paradis est un exemple de cabotin créatif : par son panache et sa verve personnelle, l'acteur sauve le spectacle en mettant alors en valeur une pièce dont l'écriture est plate et sans saveur.

 • Spellbound (1945 film) :: directed by Alfred Hitchcock, tells the story of the new head of a mental asylum who turns out not to be what he claims to be. It stars Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck, Michael Chekhov and Leo G. Carroll ... orchestral score by Miklós Rózsa notable for its pioneering use of the theremin.

Theremin :: one of the earliest fully electronic musical instruments. Invented in 1919 by Russian Léon Theremin, the theremin is unusual in that it requires no physical contact in order to produce music and was, in fact, the first musical instrument designed to be played without being touched. The instrument consists of an array of circuitry including two antennas around which the user moves his or her hands to play.

Who would not envy the Average Man ... his status as a kind of gleeful Buridan's Ass, the only constraint on whom is that he must make his choice.Gilles Châtelet
