Toba catastrophe theory recently discussed here by sd. according to Toba, a massive volcanic eruption created a genetic "bottleneck" in the human species. the bottleneck dramatically decreased number of humans & also isolated them accelerating differentiation, etc. Toba follows Out of Africa (Mitochondrial Eve) model.

checking sd's link: Toba Volcano by George Weber: four groups survived the bottleneck:

  1. Homo Neanderthalensis

  2. Homo erectus (Ngandong 6)

  3. Homo floresiensis

  4. Homo sapiens

article mentions four remains of Homo neanderthalensis discovered between 1953 & 1960 at Shanidar Cave, Iraq. Shanidar 4: adult male (The Flower Man from Shanidar); Seeds and pollen were found around his grave, suggesting they have been deliberately put there as part of funeral practises. The plants used were: grape hyacinths, bachelor's buttons, hollyhock and yellow flowering groundsel.

extremely funny comment by Weber:

Pollen of wildflowers were found around the skull of Shanidar 4 which has consequently been christened the "Flower Man". This led to the entirely reasonable speculation that there had perhaps been a funeral ceremony with flowers. It would be by far the oldest known. The assumption is hard to prove since the pollen could also have been brought into the cave by winds of small burrowing animals - but then, why should the pollen be concentrated only around this man's head? The oddest thing about this particular controversy is not the presence of pollen but the embittered ferocity with which the dispute "flowers for the funeral or not" is being fought. Some palaeontologists seem psychologically allergic to flower pollen, a problem that clearly needs much more funds and further research. {5-4. After the Bottleneck}

city flag of New Orleans displays three fleur-de-lis ("lily flower") symbols. the city also uses this symbol for signs, jewelry & also appears on the New Orleans Saints' football helmet.

Shakespeare's Ophelia & her flower speech (Meaning of Flowers):

There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember. And there is pansies, that's for thoughts. There's fennel for you, and columbines. There's rue for you, and here's some for me. We may call it herb of grace o'Sundays. O, you must wear your rue with a difference! There's a daisy. I would give you some violets, but they wither'd all when my father died. They say he made a good end.

apparently, hurricane Ophelia remains stalled off the coast of florida putting everyone on edge. forecasters can't quite pin her down with computer models running every direction. looks like Ophelia lacks "strong steering currents". checked national hurricane center earlier:

MODELS CONTINUE IN GREAT DISAGREEMENT WITH REGARDS TO THE TRACK. THE GFS WHICH LOOPED THE CYCLONE BACK TO THE WEST IN THE PREVIOUS RUN...IS NOW SHOWING A TRACK TO THE NORTHEAST. THE NOGAPS WHICH EARLIER TURN OPHELIA TO THE NORTHEAST AWAY FROM FLORIDA IS BRINGING THE CYCLONE BACK TO THE U.S. COAST. THE GFDL STUBBORNLY INSISTS ON A TRACK TO THE WEST-NORTHWEST TOWARD FLORIDA...AND THE STORY GOES ON AND ON. SINCE THE OFFICIAL FORECAST DOES NOT HAVE THE LUXURY OF MAKING SUCH LARGE CHANGES IN TRACK EVERY SIX HOUR...THE BEST OPTION FOR WEAK STEERING CURRENT SCENARIOS IS TO MAINTAIN THE CYCLONE NEARLY STATIONARY. THIS IS BASICALLY THE SOLUTION OF THE CONSENSUS. {Tropical Storm OPHELIA Discussion}

meanwhile ... the press remains locked out of New Orleans unable to document the retrieval of the dead. a fireman, refusing to speak on camera, holds up a discovered sign saying Hotel Rwanda.
