The Blob threatens Nova Scotia (via post-atomic) :: Halifax — Scientists will begin probing waters off Nova Scotia in search of a slimy creature they believe is slithering north and could be blanketing some of Canada's richest fishing grounds. Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey plan to head out Monday to a vast area over the Canadian portion of Georges Bank to look for a colony of sea squirts nicknamed the Blob for its icky texture and habit of covering most everything in its path. “It's something new. It covers up the bottom and it forms a barrier between fish and what fish feed on, so logically you'd think it could be a problem,” Page Valentine, a scientist with the agency, said from his office in Woods Hole, Mass. “At some point it could get so pervasive that everybody will realize we've got a problem out there and it'll be too late.” Dr. Valentine accidentally discovered the organism, a simple tunicate with no skeleton that filters plankton, in 2002 on the U.S. side of Georges Bank, a rich fishing area between Nova Scotia and Maine. He returned in 2003 and found that it was covering an area of at least 15 sq. kilometres. One year later, a thick carpet of the porridge-like goop had spread over more than 104 sq. kilometres.

Marine Nuisance Species @ USGS :: Within the past few years, several species of the colonial tunicate genus Didemnum from different parts of the world have drawn attention as nuisance species because they reproduce rapidly and foul marine habitats (including shellfish aquacultures and fishing grounds), ship's hulls, and maritime structures. Two species have been formally named: Didemnum vexillum described from the North and South Islands of New Zealand (Kott, 2002); and Didemnum vestum, described from Portsmouth Harbor, New Hampshire, USA (Kott, 2004). Species of the genus Didemnum that are possibly different but related to D. vexillum and D. vestum have been recorded from Europe, the U.S. west coast, British Columbia, and from coastal and offshore regions of New England other than New Hampshire.

Invasive Marine Species Found on Georges Bank :: An “invasive species” is one that is not native to an ecosystem and may harm that ecosystem if introduced. Sea squirts are tunicates, sea life with a primitive spinal cord and a firm, flexible outer covering called a “tunic,” from which the name derives. “Not everything in the study site was 100 percent covered by tunicates,” said U.S. Geological Survey researcher Page Valentine, “but in some places the mats were quite dense, covering more than 90 percent of the seabed.” The growth may be more widespread than observed in the study area alone, where the mats have grown dramatically in size and distribution in one year’s time.

Tunicate :: Urochordata (sometimes known as tunicata and commonly called urochordates, tunicates or sea squirts) is the subphylum of saclike filter feeders with input and output siphons. They are members of the phylum Chordata, which also includes birds, fish, and mammals. As with other chordates, tunicates possess a notochord during their early stages of development. Larval stages may have the appearance of a tadpole, whereas the adult stage has a much more barrel-like shape. They feed by filtering sea water through a gill basket. Tunicates consist of two openings in their body cavity. There consists an incurrent as well as excurrent siphon. The incurrent siphon is used for food and water to enter in and the excurrent siphon allows for water as well as waste to pass through and exit the tunicate ... Tunicate blood is particularly interesting. It contains high concentrations of rare metal vanadium and vanadium-associated proteins. Some Tunicates can concentrate vanadium up to a level one million times that of the surrounding seawater. It is still unknown how they do this or why.

Vanadium is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol V and atomic number 23. A rare, soft and ductile element, vanadium is found combined in certain minerals and is used mainly to produce certain alloys ... originally discovered by Andrés Manuel del Río (a Spanish mineralogist) at Mexico City in 1801, who called it "brown lead" (now named vanadinite). Through experimentation, he saw that the colors it exhibited were reminiscent of chromium, so he named the element panchromium. He later renamed this compound erythronium, since most of the salts turned red when heated ... In 1831, Sefström of Sweden rediscovered vanadium in a new oxide he found while working with some iron ores and later that same year Friedrich Wöhler confirmed del Rio's earlier work. Metallic vanadium was isolated by Henry Enfield Roscoe in 1867, who reduced vanadium chloride (VCl3) with hydrogen. The name vanadium comes from Vanadis, a goddess in Scandinavian mythology, because the element has beautiful multicolored chemical compounds ... Vanadium is essential to ascidians or sea squirts in Vanadium Chromagen Proteins. The concentration of vanadium in their blood is more than 100 times higher than the concentration of vanadium in the seawater around them. Administration of oxovanadium compounds has been shown to alleviate diabetes mellitus symptoms in certain animal models and humans. Much like the chromium effect on sugar metabolism, the mechanism of this effect is unknown.

Vanadinite is a mineral with the formula Pb5(VO4)3Cl, lead chlorovanadate ... It has hexagonal crystals, usually prismatic but the crystals are often skeletal or cavernous and it may be found in crusts. It is brittle and has an uneven fracture. The hardness of vanadinite is 2.75-3 and its specific gravity is 6.7-7.2. It has a resinous lustre and is coloured yellow, yellowish-brown, reddish-brown or red. It is translucent or opaque.

Freya :: (equivalent to Venus, Aphrodite & Vanadis descended from Nerthus) Freya (Freyja), the sister of Frey (Freyr) and the daughter of Niord, is usually seen as the fertility goddess of Norse mythology. Freya means lady, female ruler, in Old Norse (cf. fru or Frau in Scandinavian and German).

Asteroid #76 Freia {02AQ32Rx} antiscia ORCHIS zero point.

asteroid #240 Vanadis {15SG57} is a fairly large Main belt asteroid. This very dark asteroid is classified as a C-type asteroid and is probably composed of privitive carbonates. It was discovered by A. Borrelly on August 27, 1884 in Marseilles and was named after Freya (Vanadis), the Norse fertility goddess.

Nerthus :: The goddess Nerthus (also sometimes Hertha) was a Germanic fertility goddess described by Tacitus. He describes a sacrifice to this goddess in a lake on what is sometimes interpreted as the island of Fyn, in Denmark. The actual Germanic name of the goddess in Tacitus's times might have been *Nerþuz. It is closely related to that of Njord (Njörðr), one of the Vanir and a god of the sea in Norse mythology.

goddess venerated in Roman times, in and around the Netherlands. She was probably a goddess of abundance and protection. A good number of stone altars devoted to her have been found in the estuary of the river Scheldt, near the village of Domburg and are on display in museums in Middelburg and Leiden, the Netherlands. Two more were found in Cologne, Germany. Many of these votive altars were dedicated to Nehalennia for safe passage on sea. She was usually depicted seated, with a basket of apples, and a dog at her side.

Nehellenia Frisian-Roman goddess worshipped in the second century and third century C.E. in the territory of what is now the province of Zeeland in The Netherlands. She was a local goddess whose main function appeared to be the protection of travellers, especially seagoing travellers. Most of what is known about her comes from the remains of offering stones which have been dregged up from the Oosterschelde since 1970.

“Nether Moon,” a variant of the Goddess Hel; “moon of the underworld/realm of the dead.” Alias of Hel or Holle. presided over healing, death, and rebirth. She is often seen with a dog. She is often seen standing on the prow of a ship. Queen Nehellenia & Goddess Nehalennia Compared & Origin of Queen Nehellenia's Name
