Note: Alexandrina Victoria was born 24-May-1819, and Johann Tobias Bürg [+][+][+][+] discovered Antares' companion star (Antares-B) on 13-Apr-1819. Bode's response to Bürg's discovery: "Antares is no double star". But, "Bode, of course, was wrong". Ormsby M. Mitchel [+][+][+][+][+] (West Point, Class of 1829 {PDF}, with Robert E. Lee; commissioned brigadier general, American Civil War) confirmed Bürg's discovery at the Cincinnati Observatory July 1845 (Burnham's Celestial Handbook provides a synopsis [+][+][+][+]). Antares' triplicity was incorrectly announced in Washington, D.C. on 30-Jul-1846. Mitchel observed Antares-B again August 1846 and further confirmed that the triplicity of Antares could not be sustained. Neptune was discovered 24-Sep-1846 during a triple conjunction with Saturn.

Throughout history, royal astrologers have cast horoscopes to identify auspicious celestial events for a royal birth. While Bürg's discovery 41 days prior to Victoria's birth was not heralded at the time, Antares-B is symbolic. Most notably, the succession crisis preceding Victoria's birth, due to the "triple obstetric tragedy" of Princess Charlotte's death by postpartum hemorrhage after delivering a stillborn son. Princess Charlotte was 3rd in the line of succession after King George III and her father George IV, leaving the line of succession without a third generation. At her birth, Victoria was 5th in the line of succession after her uncles—George IV (d.1830), Duke of York and Albany (d.1827), and William IV (d.1837)—and father, the Duke of Kent (d.1820).

Mary Proctor noted [+][+] Antares-B could only be seen with a powerful telescope and that "Antares had long been a source of perplexity to astronomers". A "peculiar green light" was "persistently" in view, but the companion itself avoided detection. Burnham described Antares-B as "a little spark of glittering emerald", Antares a deep saffron-rose. Trivially, when Victoria received Confirmation at sixteen she wrote in her diary: "the King gave me a very handsome set of emeralds, and the Queen a head-piece of the same kind". The Imperial State Crown includes emeralds. Albert's betrothal ring to Victoria was a gold serpent with emeralds. Antares-B probably best symbolizes Victoria's relationship with Albert.

{1} Fomalhaut & Regulus changed degrees during Obama's first term; Aldebaran changes degree during his second term on 03-Oct-2014, 32 days before the 2014 Midterm Elections. While it took FDR three terms to cycle three Royal Stars, it will take Obama two terms to cycle three Royal Stars. The next presidential inauguration is 20-Jan-2017 and Antares changes degree 39 days later on 28-Feb-2017 @ 11:40:23pm EST.

{2} Regulus and Fomalhaut have moved to their 21st century, geocentric positions. «themes: a. Fomalhaut to Regulus = 184°1'56" (opposition); b. Regulus to Aldebaran = 80° (bi-novile: waxing or waning? or, is this really a square?); c. mass movements»

{3} The Aldebaran-Antares axis is described by Robert Powell in The Babylonian Zodiac. First, whether it's year 555 or 2013, the sidereal positions of the fixed stars don't change that much: Aldebaran = Taurus 15°, Regulus = Leo 5°, Antares = Scorpio 15°, Fomalhaut = Aquarius 9°. The sidereal positions of the four Royal Stars are in the fixed signs: Leo (Fire) opposite Aquarius (Air); Taurus (Earth) opposite Scorpio (Water), and they are all first magnitude stars. Powell notes the special relationship between Aldebaran and Antares: the rising of one coincides with the setting of the other. Thereby they divide the zodiacal belt exactly in two. This striking property, relating to two of the brightest stars in the zodiacal belt, evidently led to these two stars being chosen as the "fiducial axis" for the Babylonian zodiac. They are "a reference axis for all the stars of the zodiacal belt". The zodiac belt has 12 signs of 30 degrees because Aldebaran and Antares were located at the center of Taurus and Scorpio. This new structure aligned with an already existing Babylonian calendar of 12 months and 30 days (with intercalation).
