the trojan belt [13 Nov 2005|06:16am]

trojans are two sets of asteroids 60° before & behind a planet's orbit. (simple lagrange points intro). jupiter trojans named after characters in the Iliad. asteroids at L4 (before jupiter) represent the Greeks; asteroids at L5 (after jupiter) represent the Trojans. jovian trojans share a 1:1 resonance with Jupiter.

imho, the jupiter trojans have the best naming structure because {a} Jupiter-Zeus "divides" the two "camps"; {b} asteroid 588-ACHILLES [L4] discovered first on 22-Feb-1906 & The Iliad begins Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus (Butler; make sure to read The Name) & {c} two "spys" created, one greek & one trojan, before the naming of these asteroids kicked in where 617-PATROCLUS [L5-Greek Spy] (discovered 17-Oct-1906) in the trojan camp & 624-HEKTOR [L4-Trojan Spy] (discovered 10-Feb-1907) in the greek camp.

currently, there are 1828 jovian trojans: 1109 = L4, 719 = L5. the 827 List currently has 11 L4s & 3 L5s:

 588-ACHILLES [L4], 12238-ACTOR [L4], 911-AGAMEMNON [L4], 1404-AJAX [L4], 23355-ELEPHENOR [L4], 22222-HODIOS [L4], 4543-PHOINIX [L4], 5283-PYRRHUS [L4], 15913-TELEMACHUS [L4], 5264-TELEPHUS [L4] & 15651-TLEPOLEMOS [L4].

 9430-ERICHTHONIOS [L5], 3317-PARIS [L5] & 9142-RHESUS [L5].

Not a word he spoke, but went by the shore of the sounding sea and prayed apart to King Apollo whom lovely Leto had borne. "Hear me," he cried, "O god of the silver bow, that protectest Chryse and holy Cilla and rulest Tenedos with thy might, hear me oh thou of Sminthe. If I have ever decked your temple with garlands, or burned your thigh-bones in fat of bulls or goats, grant my prayer, and let your arrows avenge these my tears upon the Danaans." {Iliad}

#2223-SARPEDON L5 is a trojan asteroid

notes from 22-Apr-2004

3670. Sarpedon, general of Demetrius' forces was defeated by Tryphon's army to whom the inhabitants of Ptolemais were allied. He retired with his soldiers into the Mediterranean country. As the victorious forces of Tryphon were marching along the sea coast between Ptolemais and Tyre, they were suddenly hit by a giant wave from the sea which rose to an incredible height and rushed with a great force upon the land. Many drowned. Some were pulled out to sea by the retreating wave and others were left dead in hollow places. The retreating wave left a great number of fish with the dead bodies. When Sarpedon's soldiers heard of this disaster, they quickly returned there and were very pleased to see the destruction of the enemy. They gathered up very many of the fishes and sacrificed them to Neptune, the deliverer before the gates of Ptolemais where the battle was fought. (Strabo, l. 16. p. 758. & Athenaus, l. 8. c. 2. from the History of Possidonius, the Stoick.) {broken link}

Homeric Hymns - Fragment #19A :: So she (Europa) crossed the briny water from afarto Crete, beguiled by the wiles of Zeus. Secretly did the Fathersnatch her away and gave her a gift, the golden necklace, the toywhich Hephaestus the famed craftsman once made by his cunningskill and brought and gave it to his father for a possession. And Zeus received the gift, and gave it in turn to the daughter of proud Phoenix. But when the Father of men and of gods had mated so far off with trim-ankled Europa, then he departed back again from the rich-haired girl. So she bare sons to the almighty Son of Cronos, glorious leaders of wealthy men -- Minos the ruler, and just Rhadamanthys and noble Sarpedon the blameless and strong. To these did wise Zeus give each a share of his honour. Verily Sarpedon reigned mightily over wide Lycia and ruled very many cities filled with people, wielding the sceptre of Zeus: and great honour followed him, which his father gave him, the great-hearted shepherd of the people. For wise Zeus ordained that he should live for three generations of mortal men and not waste away with old age. He sent him to Troy; and Sarpedon gathered a great host, men chosen out of Lycia to be allies to the Trojans. These med did Sarpedon lead, skilled in bitter war. And Zeus, whose wisdom is everlasting, sent him forth from heaven a star, showing tokens for the return of his dear son.... ....for well he (Sarpedon) knew in his heart that the sign was indeed from Zeus. Very greatly did he excel in war together with man-slaying Hector and brake down the wall, bringing woes upon the Danaans. But so soon as Patroclus had inspired the Argives with hard courage....'

There exist two groups of Asteroids far away from main Asteroid belt and located in the orbital line of the planet Jupiter. As most of the Asteroids of these two groups are named after heroes of legendary TROJAN WAR, these groups are called TROJAN GROUPS of Asteroids. In these two groups, one is called ACHILLES Group (AG) and another is called PATROCLUS Group (PG). AG located in FRONT side of Jupiter at 60° and PG located at 60° behind Jupiter. Both groups are located at equal distance from Jupiter that is at distance of 778.35 Million Kilometer and distance between the Sun and these groups is also same i.e.,778.35. This is TRIANGULAR SYSTEM of the Sun, Jupiter and Asteroids Groups. These two groups AG and PG revolve around the Sun at Velocity of 13.1 Kilometer per Second, which is equal to Jupiter’s Velocity. {Decoding Mystery of Trojan Asteroids}

{Aeneid} Venus (Aphrodite) mother of Aeneas and of Cupid; goddess of love; she constantly worries about her son Aeneas, despite Jupiter's assurances that he will be fine. Aeneas Trojan prince, son of Venus and Anchises, father of Ascanius, lover of Dido, ancestor of the Roman people.

Death of Sarpedon :: Keywords - Anatomy, Catastrophe, Death and Dying, Empathy, Euthanasia, Father-Son Relationship, Mourning, Pain, Suffering, Trauma, War and Medicine. This early Greek painting depicts an episode from Homer's Iliad where Sarpedon, a hero of the Trojan War, is killed by the spear of Patroklos, an enemy warrior. Zeus watches as his son "dies raging". {image: vase}

Blue Triangle Butterfly - Graphium sarpedon < FAMILY PAPILIONIDAE :: The Blue Triangle Butterflies have wings which are black to dark brown in colour with large blue area in the middle. Those blue patterns joint to make a triangle and this comes their common name. The underside pattern of the wings are similar except there are the red spots on the hind wings bottom.

note: Lagrange points L4 & L5 sometimes called triangular Lagrange points because they're the 3rd point of an equilateral triangle with Sun-Jupiter.

SARPEDON, in Greek legend, son of Zeus and Laodameia, Lycian prince and hero of the Trojan war. He fought on the side of the Trojans, and after greatly distinguishing himself by his bravery, was slain by Patroclus. A terrible stniggle took place for the possession of his body, until Apollo rescued it from the Greeks, and by the command of Zeus washed and cleansed it, anointed it with ambrosia, and handed it over to Sleep and Death, by whom it was conveyed for burial to Lycia, where a sanctuary (Sarpedoneum) was erected in honor of the fallen hero. Virgil (A en. i. 100) knows nothing of the removal of the body to Lycia. In later tradition, Sarpedon was the son of Zeus and Europa and the brother of Minos. Having been expelled from Crete by the latter, he and his comrades sailed for Asia, where he finally became king of Lycia. Euripides (Rhesus, 29) confuses the two Sarpedons.

Julliberrie's Grave [13 Nov 2005|07:09am]

once i pegged CILLA i did every search possible for anything to "ping". wasn't getting much. just interesting trivia.

Chilham :: parish in the English county of Kent. Sitting in the valley of the River Stour there are three settlements in the parish, Chilham, Shottenden and Old Wives Lees. The Neolithic longbarrow of Julliberrie's Grave is in the parish.

Lucifer :: A description of the supernatural fall - "the whole day long I was carried headlong, and at sunset I fell in Lemnos, and but little life was in me"; relates the fall of Hephaestus from Olympus in Homer's Iliad I:591ff, but it was drawn upon by Christian authors embellishing the fall of Lucifer.

{The Sacred Archer}

Jane Austen Letters :: Your letter to Mary was duly received before she left Dean with Martha yesterday morning, and it gives us great pleasure to know that the Chilham ball was so agreeable, and that you danced four dances with Mr. Kemble. Desirable, however, as the latter circumstance was, I cannot help wondering at its taking place. Why did you dance four dances with so stupid a man? Why not rather dance two of them with some elegant brother officer who was struck with your appearance as soon as you entered the room?

Julliberrie's Grave :: The Julliberrie name is likely to derive from antiquarian speculation although the folk etymology is that it is the burial site of a giant named Julaber. A popular early explanation was that it was the grave of a Roman tribune, Quintus Laberius Durus, mentioned in Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars as being slain by the Britons and Jul Laber therefore being a corruption of '[the grave of] Julius' [tribune], Laberius'.

Kent Resources: Chilham :: There is a long barrow to the South of the Village in the Valley near the River Stour. It is meant to be the final resting place of one of Julius Caesar's Captains and known as Julliberrie's Grave and is 150ft long. It is also said that it was in this spot that the Ancient Britons stood against the Tenth Legion and drove them back.

Quintus Laberius Durus :: (d. August 54 BC) was a Roman tribune who died during Julius Caesar's campaigns in Britain. In his Gallic Wars (ch 15), Caesar describes how soon after landing in Kent, the Romans were attacked whilst building a camp by the native Britons. Before re-inforcements could arrive, Durus was killed. His burial site is traditionally the earthworks of Julliberrie's Grave near Chilham. Despite his status as a footnote in history, a modern poem written by Gabriel Gudding (For Quintus Laberius Durus, Who, Because of a Javelin in His Lungs, Died Near Kent, in Early August, 54 B.C) involves him as does Colleen Mccullough's historical novel, Caesar.

Gabriel Gudding Defends Poetry :: The other poem to mention is called "For Quintus Laberius Durus, Who, Because of a Javelin in His Lungs, Died Near Kent, In Early August, 54 B.C." It's a wonderful thing, rich in language, humor and history. The blunt statements of fact are rather unique here, giving power and insight through what might have remained a mere exercise.

Even Caesar remarked
that the popping sound of his chest
when the javelin struck
and punched daylight through him
was uncommon. (64)

What bugs me
is that his last breath
went through the air chuckling
for his friends, without his wife, in a field he did not know,
near some river they call the Thames,

and lingered against the sky, winding with the herons,
warranting only
a nine word sentence. (65)

wasn't until i got to the end of the 22-April textfile & read: This early Greek painting depicts an episode from Homer's Iliad where Sarpedon, a hero of the Trojan War, is killed by the spear of Patroklos, an enemy warrior. Zeus watches as his son "dies raging". (see: (more) Sarpedon)
