NASA Announces Plan To Bring Wi-Fi To Its Headquarters By 2017

NASA's heroic first steps into the Wi-Fi Age

Since spring, NASA has also conducted some preliminary, small-scale reconnaissance missions to a Houston-area Best Buy, where crews conducted research and compared prices. Scientists within the agency say early data from the trips is promising, showing a generous return policy and an extended warranty plan. In addition, researchers have investigated the digital cable setup at veteran space shuttle astronaut Ken Bowersox's house.

Neoliberalism 101

Asmodeus
ok, still don't have coffee (but took a stiff shot of do what thou wilt). my impressions on the first two parts of the Manifesto here and here. before getting into the meat of the Manifesto (03: MANIFEST: On the Future), wanted to review some topics. 2011 post from thepeoplesview.net: Neoliberal Jargon:

…"neoliberal" [means] a particular type of market economics that "seeks to maximize the role of the private sector in determining the political and economic priorities of the state."

As an aside: the Republican economic point of view ""seeks to maximize the role of the private sector in determining the political and economic priorities of the state" by helping the "incumbents" in the private sector use the government to suppress competition and accountability: In fact, the only mainstream enemies of open markets in US politics are the Republicans, the party of entrenched monopolies that rely on the government to intervene in the economy to protect them from competition and to provide them with public funds. The battle over oil company subsidies is exactly on this topic: the Administration wants open markets and competition with Wind and Solar, while the Republicans want the taxpayers to directly subsidize the oil business with tax breaks and indirectly subsidize the oil business by allowing them to evade the environmental costs that their operations impose on other participants in the market.

"As an aside" illustrates, i think, the problem at hand.

as far as who is a neoliberal. RationalWiki says Paul Krugman, Michael Kinsley, and Bill Clinton are "prominent domestic neoliberals" (but here's 2004 talk with Cardoso/Krugman on The Future of Neoliberalism). if you're an Obamabot, Naomi Klein is problematic: A Lexicon of Disappointment)—so i'm reading a 2007 post (The neoliberalism-shock therapy connection: Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine) just to be clear what she brings to the table.

i like: Michael W. Clune on Masters of the Universe: What Was Neoliberalism?—may be a possible starting point.

Manifesto has collapsing economic paradigms, paradigmatic accelerationist thinkers & a production paradigm epitomizing Capital's "Golden Era" = Fordism.

just found another one: The paradigmatic power of sexual selection — basically, Bateman studied fruit flies concluding “there is nearly always a combination of an undiscriminating eagerness in the males and a discriminating passivity in the females”. basically, Endless Sperm vs. Peak Ovum. it took 64 years (1948 to 2012) to discover Bateman's study is flawed.

Yet shaking the bedrock of the Bateman paradigm may help the field examine new perspectives.

[[■]] The story goes like this: Earth is captured by a technocapital singularity as renaissance rationalitization and oceanic navigation lock into commoditization take-off. Logistically accelerating techno-economic interactivity crumbles social order in auto-sophisticating machine runaway. As markets learn to manufacture intelligence, politics modernizes, upgrades paranoia, and tries to get a grip. —Nick Land, Meltdown [If, in reading this, you cannot see that Fat is writing about himself, then you understand nothing]

You cannot say that an encounter with God is to mental illness what death is to cancer: the logical outcome of a deteriorating illness process. The technical term—theological technical term, not psychiatric—is theophany. A theophany consists of a self-disclosure by the divine. It does not consist of something the percipient does; it consists of something the divine—the God or gods, the high power—does. —Philip K. Dick, VALIS

contrast full VALIS paragraph (34–35) with Blake's Annotations to Watson's "Apology for The Bible":

Nothing can be more contemptible than to suppose Public RECORDS to be True. Read them & Judge, if you are not a Fool. Of what consequence is it whether Moses wrote the Pentateuch or no? If Paine trifles with some of his objections it is folly to confute him so seriously in them & leave his more material ones unanswered. Public Records! As if Public Records were True! Impossible; for the facts are such as none but the actor could tell. If it is True, Moses & none but he could write it, unless we allow it to be Poetry & that poetry inspired. If historical facts can be written by inspiration, Milton's Paradise Lost is as true as Genesis or Exodus; but the Evidence is nothing, for how can he who writes what he has neither seen nor heard of be an Evidence of The Truth of his history?

seven points describing different forms of Accelerationism (Marxist, Neoliberal, Landian) contrasted with AQ-5758—"[the] mode of acceleration which we hold as essential". first, the essential metabolism of capitalism is acceleration, recognized by Marx & Lenin; second, neoliberal accelerationism "was in fact a merely contingent means to ward off the crisis of value that emerged in the 1970s [aka, Reagan/Thatcher]… a sublimation of the crisis rather than its ultimate overcoming" [see Hirsch/Roth: The crisis which broke out in the 1970s also signified the end of the Keynesian-corporative welfare state and the emergence of a 'secular' crisis of capitalism]; third, Landian accelerationism is neoliberalism on steroids. essentially, the Interegnum points out that the Manifesto strictly focuses on the first two forms of accelerationism.

marx engels the acceleration of capital

right out the gate: All that is solid melts into air & hegemony of speed. the writers at that link [Landscapes of Capital: Representing Time, Space, & Globalization in Corporate Advertising] also wrote: Sign Wars & Nike Culture: the Sign of the Swoosh. the full sentence, from Marx-Engels, precisely describes how i felt reading the Introduction, but didn't know how to put into words:

All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses, his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind. —Communist Manifesto

from Capital, this stands out:

The credit system appears as the main lever of over-production and over-speculation in commerce solely because the reproduction process, which is elastic by nature, is here forced to its extreme limits, and is so forced because a large part of the social capital is employed by people who do not own it and who consequently tackle things quite differently than the owner, who anxiously weighs the limitations of his private capital in so far as he handles it himself. This simply demonstrates the fact that the self-expansion of capital based on the contradictory nature of capitalist production permits an actual free development only up to a certain point, so that in fact it constitutes an immanent fetter and barrier to production, which are continually broken through by the credit system.[4] Hence, the credit system accelerates the material development of the productive forces and the establishment of the world-market. It is the historical mission of the capitalist system of production to raise these material foundations of the new mode of production to a certain degree of perfection. At the same time credit accelerates the violent eruptions of this contradiction — crises — and thereby the elements of disintegration of the old mode of production.Capital Vol. III Part V, Chapter 27. The Role of Credit in Capitalist Production

more about the role of Credit & the Crisis of Capitalism. so, "credit accelerates the velocity of the metamorphoses" [example: background for neo-liberalism; note Austerity is one of the reform programs.]

the main critique against Landianism is speed, which means: not only the amount of cycles but their duration. (Klein's The Shock Doctine describes this phenomena; aka, creative-destruction). the Manifesto creates a scission between those forms of accelerationism (fundamentally neoliberalism on steroids) and a type of politics capable of turning "accelerationism" into a verb and not a noun. [if you're an Obamabot, you pretty much know how that works already.]

in another sense, neoliberalism—in all its forms—is also not dialectical (see here & here), but an Accelerationist Politics should be (and i'll explore that in the next section). the Interegnum makes clear the different forms of accelerationism: neoliberalism is the state of play, mediating factors constrain Landianism as an effective political force…

we are compelled. our sober senses are not lurching into crisis. what politics effectively deals with real conditions and relations?

Accelerationist Politics: 01. Introduction

Commentary

recently checking notes on old pc, came across Jameson quote ("the supreme literary expression, if not of postmodernism then of late capitalism itself"), found full quote here: In Defense of Fredric Jameson's Prose (really). contrast Jameson (It is safest to grasp the… contents are just more images) with above. as a non-academic reader, the most interesting phrase: "rigorously work out the mediating factors" [Mediation (Marxist theory and media studies)].

Cornelius Castoriadis, The Greek and the Modern Political Imaginary :: Why "imaginary"? …human history… is in its essence defined by imaginary creation… the positing of new forms… Each society creates its own forms. These forms in turn bring into being a world in which this society inscribes itself and gives itself a place. It is by means of them that society constitutes a system of norms, institutions in the broadest sense of the term, values, orientations, and goals of collective life, as well as of individual life. At their core are to be found in each instance social imaginary significations, which also are created by each society and which are embodied in its institutions.

  • {29} Other regulationists are less hesitant to give names to the future. Hirsch is one of them. He has developed an elaborate vision of the post-Fordist future (Hirsch and Roth, 1986; Hirsch, 1985a; Hirsch, in this volume). His outline of 'the new face of capitalism' is based partly on his conception of the causes for the crisis of Fordism and partly on an extrapolation of already visible changes.

  • {70} The crisis which broke out in the 1970s also signified the end of the Keynesian-corporative welfare state and the emergence of a 'secular' crisis of capitalism with economic, political and ideological dimensions (Hirsch and Roth, 1986, p. 78).

Joachim Hirsch, Regulation Theory and its Applicability to Studies on Globalization and Social Change (1995)

The crisis of the old world order also provoked a disorder within the traditional frameworks of economic, social and political theory. The theory of international relations has, for example, some problems to deal with the new situation of "after hegemony". Keynesianism lost its position in the field of economic theory and was replaced by neoclassic and monetarist theories. These show, in turn, remarkable problems in explaining what is going on. [me: no kidding]  It is obvious at least, that the market does not solve all problems of society. Classical theories of imperialism, development or underdevelopment seem no longer valid and are in many aspects empirically refuted… We have to ask, whether there are any new theoretical frameworks which are able to meet the shortcomings of all this traditional approaches. The question is whether Regulation Theory can contribute with a solution… Regulation theory has done a fairly good job in explaining the crisis of Fordism which marks the starting point of this whole development. It should, however, be kept in mind that this process is not the result of any economic logic or historical trajectory. It is a decisive political strategy by the internationalized sectors of capital in cooperation with neo-liberal governments. Its aim is a world-wide and systemic rationalization process, based on internationalization, deregulation and flexibilization, which is expected to re-establish the profitability of capital after the crisis of Fordism.

part of the 24th point of the manifesto is at the beginning:

AQ-10955

24. The future needs to be constructed. It has been demolished by neoliberal capitalism and reduced to a cut-price promise of greater inequality, conflict, and chaos. This collapse in the idea of the future is symptomatic of the regressive historical status of our age, rather than, as cynics across the political spectrum would have us believe, a sign of sceptical maturity. What accelerationism pushes towards is a future that is more modern — an alternative modernity that neoliberalism is inherently unable to generate. The future must be cracked open once again, unfastening our horizons towards the universal possibilities of the Outside.

It's a very interesting phenomenon, the lie detector test. What it does is to measure certain physiological responses to a psychological situation. What it reveals is that the physiology of the individual is a separate entity from the ego. So it's as though a second personality is standing behind me when I'm taking a lie detector test, and you ask me a question that I don't want to acknowledge, and I'll say 'no' and the man standing behind me will say: 'Oh yes, that's what the physiological response does'. So it tells us just in irrefutable terms that there is a second entity, second psychic centre, in the human psyche and it's interested in truth. —Merrill Berger and Stephen Segaller, Wisdom of the Dream: The World of C. G. Jung (AQ-379, AQ-10955)

i'm aware of academic responses to this manifesto which may... evaluate how it rigorously works out the mediating factors. but i'm not looking at them right now. however, after looking at Hirsch i'm questioning this statement: Thirty years of neoliberalism have rendered most left-leaning political parties bereft of radical thought, hollowed out, and without a popular mandate. At best they have responded to our present crises with calls for a return to a Keynesian economics, in spite of the evidence that the very conditions which enabled post-war social democracy to occur no longer exist.

Keynes comes up in #2 of the manifesto, so i'll look at that again. i see the At best but then there's in spite of and wonder if anyone else has problems with this statement. [maybe i should link to Kthug here, lol — might be a good idea]

AQ-5428

At best [most left-leaning political parties] have responded to our present crises with calls for a return to a Keynesian economics, in spite of the evidence that the very conditions which enabled post-war social democracy to occur no longer exist. We cannot return to mass industrial-Fordist labour by fiat, if at all.

To cut this postshort, i.e. to skip some logical step for the sake of brevity, one might say that there is really no freedom in the world without the distinction betwen possible and actual. The lack of the distinction between what is (actual) and what could be (possible)  is making it impossible for us to decide what should be —The Nightmare of Things-In-Themselves

…articulating an effect of negativity (being "attended by dirt and detritus, intrud[ing] destructively into matter, [and] abrasive to what is already achieved") —Creative Work

AQ-10954

In a sense Benjamin's over-identification with technical work disrupts the minimal distance of the creative ideology - it suggests a guide to disrupting the existent regime of visibilities. It does so, precisely, by articulating an effect of negativity (being "attended by dirt and detritus, intrud[ing] destructively into matter, [and] abrasive to what is already achieved"). This is what overturns the relentlessly positivities of creativity, whether encoded in the figure of the artist dilettante or the reconvened under the sign of measures and financial reward. This is truly the labour of the negative against the ideology of creativity.

He caught her arm and felt her body tense. He set his teeth, wishing, as he had a hundred times since Ramoth rose in her first mating flight, that Lessa had not been virgin too. He had not thought to control his dragon-incited emotions and Lessa's first sexual experience had been violent. It had surprised him to be first, considering that her adolescent years had been spent drudging for lascivious warders and soldier-types. Evidently no one had bothered to penetrate the curtain of rags and filth she had carefully maintained as a disguise. He had been a considerate and gentle bedmate ever since, but, unless Ramoth and Mnementh were involved, he might as well call it rape. —Anne McCaffrey, Dragonflight

The universe manifests in multiplicity, but unity is possible. More specifically, God, the Cosmos, and Man are distinct but may be reconciled and reunited. The covenant of David promised that his line would produce the Messiah, the Deushomo, and from a mystical perspective, this applies not merely to Jesus but to all those who may achieve God-union or become gods in this life. This is alluded to by, among other things, the triangle-circle-square motif, Deus-Homo-Rota, the square-circle associated with Christus, the circle-triangle associated with Ens, the triangle associated with the Trinity, triangle-"per"-square, exi ut introeas, Luke 11:52, and so on. —The Absolute Key to Occult Science

Yet he knew someday, somehow, he would coax her into responding wholeheartedly to his lovemaking. He had a certain pride in his skill, and he was in a position to persevere.

Music was "invented" by the legendary emperor, Huang Di (the "Yellow Emperor") in the 27th century BCE. Acting on Huang Di's orders, Ling Lun traveled west to Kunlun and found a special bamboo grove in the valley of Hsieh-chhi. "Cutting one between the nodes …, he blew it, and took its fundamental note (kung) to be that of the Huang-chung tube. Blowing again, he said 'This is good enough', and proceeded to make all the twelve pipes. Then at the foot of the Juan-yu (i.e., Kunlun) mountains, he listened to the singing of the male and female phoenix and divided the pitchpipes accordingly…, the male notes making six and the female also six. Indeed the Huang-chung fundamental (kung) is capable of generating the entire (series). …(Upon his return) Ling Lun … was ordered by Huang [Di] to cast twelve bells in order to harmonise the five notes so that splendid music might be made." —Needham, Vol. 4, Pt. I, pp. 178-179

24. This for a time appointed. Seek not the end, I shall instruct thee in my way. But be true. Would it be hard if I were thy lover, and before thee? But I am thy lover and I am with thee. —Liber 49: The Book of Babalon

By implicitly or explicitly comparing light to a cloth, these poems show that illumination itself can be stripped away - that behind one layer of vision lies another. —Rachel Hadas, Form, Cycle, Infinity: Landscape Imagery in the Poetry of Robert Frost and George Seferis

Conjecture (conjectural emendation) is a critical reconstruction of the original reading of a clearly corrupt, contaminated, nonsensical or illegible textual fragment. —Conjecture (textual criticism), Wikipedia

…but to think that the Rocket State can be imagined in complete isolation from its actual fascist ancestry seems like a stretch.

First crank a hard cutback as you hit the wall. There's a screaming bottom curve, so watch out. Remember: rip it, roll it, and punch it.

The future must be cracked open once again, unfastening our horizons towards the universal possibilities of the Outside.

the blogger ponders

Asmodeus

a friend is following the arias trial and, being a good friend, i decided to google info: tamaratattles.com. a news site may give you "facts" but a blog and its comment section give you a (sometimes strong) pov, info not provided by MSM (eg, i learned about the stunbelt and the possible use of in TT's comment section), and a group of people who share the same interests as you. TT recently posted, The Blogger Vents about the challenges of being a blogger. but it's something my friend said that's making me write this LJ: what is a blog?

warning: coffee zero, cigs ½ pack, occasional pitstops.

my friend didn't know about TT, but thought TT's sense of humor was hilarious (like i do) & it gave us something to talk about. but i was surprised she didn't know what a blog was. you know what a blog is! maybe she wasn't used to a blog with a single author who's also managing (if their blog is popular) a comment section, email responses, other blogger responses, &c.

i've been blogging since 2003 at LJ and can count all my commenters with… four fingers. if LJ pageviews are any indication, i have my share of lurkers & spikes. my next serious LJ may be on Freud's Q & don't think too many people would be interested in that. but, an LJ exploring #ACCELERATE MANIFESTO for an Accelerationist Politics might be a good idea for the 2014 midterms. but still, i'm a certain type of blogger. so what am i getting at? my friend wants to write a book & i said: you can blog about it and, because of the topic, you'd probably find an audience & engage with them. blogging can help you work out ideas, figure out how to write your ideas while getting feedback, which can be expanded into a book. i've seen people do that. so you can too!

other than that, i can't help her blog. but i can write about my blogging experience: blogs i visit and why i visit them and what i get from them. what makes a good blog? what is the future for blogs?

had to write all that out to get to something: i LJ and tweet and tumblr — i'm part of a specific part of the blogosphere. google has surely analyticized me! so the me that is blogging and tweeting (even lurking) is being viewed. however, i'm ok with just machines reading me. i don't need humans. :)

it's the bloggers who are human interacting with other humans. that's the key.

of course i need humans. commenting on blogs is a way of interacting with other humans, but (as i realized today) once i start acting the troll i need to reconsider my online social humanity (i don't have one!). being human, in my case, means lurking (something i'm very good at in real life). even in cyberspace apples don't fall very far from...

grew up in california, visited california, but it wasn't until i drove an eight lane freeway (in.one.direction) in california... yikes. that's what commenting is like. blogging is like that too. since blogging doesn't automatically mean you're socially interacting (you've got comments), comments may be the real social training ground. i like this post because it mentions northanger abbey! (and i created an animated gif from the image, but that's on the old pc). since most blogging platforms allow tweets, vids, imgs, like, stfu, &c in comments, pure textual interaction (just text) in blog comments may indicate an engaged commentariat.

Seven of the top 10 most congested corridors were in Los Angeles, and i've been on all 7 of them, including the Orange Crush. that is blogging on steroids.

must leave at 5:30p and i'm slowpokey today… so bottom line: the only email i really get is from my family. sitting at dinner thinking of appropriate topics to talk about, quickly scanning all the blogs i lurk at: NONE OF YOU GIVE ME ANYTHING THAT DROPS EASILY INTO CONVERSATION. but you make me laugh, you make me think. sometimes, you remind me i'm human. some of you can say: drop what you're doing & read this now, and a lot of us do so. i may go meh on your post but a quick pointed comment makes me reconsider.

eccentrics, weirdos, first adopters get kicked out of sandboxes about to go supernova. and that tells me, that if you think you're the type that can deal with the headache, maybe now is the time to consider a certain type of… populist? popular?… blogging.

my everyday blogs: TOD & BJ -- told family about TOD. during 2012 election, told mom: don't let MSM freaku out, they're not telling you the full picture (and then filled in some blanks). mom said, after the election, that i kept her calm :) ---- nope, it was definitely Nate Silver and everybody talking about his analysis, and me able to communicate that to my mom, that kept her calm. THANKU! 2008, we were all talking all day all the time. 2012, i'm moving with no internet connection. blogs make a difference.
